Urbex Stupid things we do/guilty pleasures of ours

I'm just curious about the dumb things you guys enjoy doing while exploring..for me I like to turn my light off and wander around in the dark. I only do this in segments I've already explored and I know are clear of nails/syringes, but I do enjoy wandering around in the dark in abandoned buildings with my flashlight off. Probably not the smartest thing..but I enjoy it. I understand others are frightened by this idea. I don't watch horror movies or anything like that so I think that helps me a lot lol

Turning off your light and sitting down and just chilling there taking everything in for a bit is a fun time.

Also keeping count of things--coffee cups, dead animals, broken windows, etc.

Breaking stuff I wouldn't normally break. I'm not talking about actually vandalizing a place I explore (I hate when people do that) but something like a broken window, just breaking it a little more.

Back when Addison-Wesley was still standing, there was a HUGE window that had already been smashed. A giant fragment was laying on the ground and since nobody was around, I picked it up and just smashed it on the floor.

I'd also never used a fire extinguisher before, so I took one out and used it. It was big, heavy, and very loud.

Nude photos in random places.

I also tend to lay down and fall asleep in various abandonments.

I do actually carry flares in my backpack in case I need them in an emergency situation like if I'm in a drain and my flashlight falls in the water or if it breaks in a really dark building. I will admit I've been tempted to light them a couple times for fun because it'd look cool..but every time I remind myself that that's how dumb kids burn down buildings lol

Reminds me--once, a few weeks back, I was where I wasn't supposed to be with someone, and he pointed out that someone had shot a flare into the sky. We live in the city, so it was more than a little odd to see, and the unknown person shot 3 or 4 that we noticed. Never did find out what happened or who lit them. We assumed it was a dumb kid, I never really thought of it as a backup for exploring situations though.

Kinda

A friend and I, whenever we go exploring or something and come across an article of clothing, like sweaters, boots, helmets or something, we always ask each other "would you wear that?" and when we find something that used to be food, we ask "would you eat that?" I'm not sure how it started and honestly, it's not that funny, but for some reason, we find it hilarious.

We also have a running joke that discarded Tim's cups and apple juice bottles are washrooms after we were hanging out in an abandonment for way too long for our bladders. "Damn, I really hope we find a Tim's cup soon, I gotta pee so bad." *Points at extra large Tim's cup* "Oh look, they have a handicapped washroom"

Again, sounds really stupid and I don't know why we still think its so funny.

Abando-crafting. I once gleaned a dozen 1920s canning jars, a box of unused rubber rings, a jar of crystallized honey, and a half bushel of (fresh) apples from an abandoned orchard farm down the road. Best applesauce I ever made.

Guerilla gardening is fun. I also like bringing the outside in—putting flowers in the vase on the table, for example.

Critiquing the art is always fun. Trying to decide what the artist was trying to say, what the deeper meaning is in the word PENIS painted in six foot tall letters across an entire wall.

Freud would have a field day with that.

Like the OP said: Wandering around in the pitch black with no light in a drain! If you've never done it, it's tons of fun - especially if you're alone with your SO. It makes for a great date. Obviously keep a flashlight in you pocket, and don't do this in a drain that you don't already know well.

I like to think of scary things to do in case another group is around. I would never do anything like this, but it is fun to talk about with the people I am with.

My favorite idea so far, though, is to tuck my head into my shirt and grope helplessly on the ground as though seeking my missing head.

My friend said that she would streak her eyeliner down her cheeks and shriek, "WHERE ARE MY BABIES!"

Pretty classic campfire story stuff.

Like I said, I would never actually do that, though. I ran across a group of drunk teenagers once, and I tried to let them know I was there in the least threatening way possible, and they still almost threw a hatchet at me.

Me and two friends were firing fireworks off in a small residential drain thinking they were the repetitive fireball ones when in reality they were the ones that shoot 30m up then make a deafening explosion... Once we got out of the drain and our hearing came back we found out people 200m away down the street had heard it go off...

Speaking of which, wasn't there a series of roman candle duels a couple of years back, during a convention exploring the tunnels under Minneapolis/St. Paul? I wasn't there, but I thought I saw someone mention it on the forums.

Like this? This thing was staring at me when I peeked a broken back window of an old farmhouse. Someone before me definitely did that.

yes! turning off all equipment and just "being" in the space. I agree 100%

I don't have all that much equipment anyway. I'm usually loaded down with microbial sampling equipment
