Reeking of the Marineland / Green Oaks trailer park debacle from half a decade ago, the Niagara region is now the site of another mass eviction. Residents of this retirement community in Fort Erie were given notice by the land-owner, a Language Arts professor at Brock University, of her intention to return the land to an agricultural use. Surely this has nothing to do with the announcement of the construction of the Canadian Motor Speedway just south of the property and is all a heavy coincidence of timing. To be fair, the landowner followed all legal procedures, paying each of the tenants $3000.

Most of the residents here had the type of trailers that were permanently mounted to the ground and built onto with sun-rooms and other extensions. Without mobile capabilities, many of them had no easy way to move their homes. "We are trying to work with her," one resident said. "We are willing to increase rent or to help with the land. We are willing to do what we need to do to keep our homes." In the end, it wasn't enough. In fact, the landowner made each resident financially responsible for the removal of their own structures. As most of these residents were on pensions and couldn't possibly foot that kind of bill, they instead abandoned their homes.

awesome stuff as always GS! great write up in the details

That was interesting in an odd way, in that it reminds me of how eviction takes place over here in Korea. Strange that it would just be one land owner deciding to change things around and ruining lives based on her own singular whim.
Also, in 22, are those g-g-g-ghosts?

Nice write up! Even if it tells a sad story...

I don't understand why people do this.. Sounds like it was making a fair income for her, and now she has to foot the bill for trash removal and demolition? Seems odd. How viable is that land for "Agricultural use" anyways? Sounds like more of a cover for something else.
