Toronto hates pigs

Haven’t shared a story in awhile, so here’s another post…

A couple months back a friend told me about an eerie abandoned facility that he had previously explored, so one day we both made our way out there on a wet, overcast afternoon. I arrived an hour early, so I figured I’d try and find my way in alone, to fill a small hole in my deteriorating self-esteem. Thankfully, I managed to weave my way through the overly try-hard security and take a quick peak inside. To give you an idea of how creepy it is, after disrupting a whole swarm of bats like in the movies, I opened the door into the dark, dripping hallway, and I honestly couldn’t take more than a few paces down the before I bolted back for the door.

This facility used to deal with the killing of pigs, lots and lots of pigs, 6000 a day to be precise. Back in the day, Toronto used to be a city that took pride in the slaughter of pigs, and some saw the stench of dead animals as a sign of prosperity, just as smoke was an “emblem of industrial progress.” But as time went on we Torontonians became civilized and eventually the new condo residents living next to the plant began to detest the sound of squealing pigs about to meet their fate. That, and a combination of other fiscal factors forced the plant to close down, leaving behind one hell of a spooky building.

The interior of this beast is simply awesome; despite it having sat around for awhile now, the hallways are relatively intact from graffiti and the rooms are pretty much spared of any obvious abuse. Exploring it is kind of like walking along the pigs ‘stairway to heaven’, as the entire complex basically follows the path that pigs would’ve taken to be turned into tasty bacon. A few notable spots are the industrial elevators, the stainless steel butcher room, the basement (which made for some insane pics) and the red hallway (I wonder why they painted it red) that was used to carry cattle up on hooks to the rooms where they were stabbed in the throat.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

Piles and piles of cut combo locks everywhere, along with old butchering knives all tosses into one room!

The amount of slaughterhouses and meat packers in Toronto's early days are why Toronto has the nickname "Hogtown".

One day I got a good camera.
