Sunday in Gary

After almost two months of not having time to explore anything, I was able to organize a trip to Gary this past weekend. I went by myself back in August and this time brought a friend along. We had time for four locations, one of which I had already explored back in August but my friend really wanted to see it.

1. Our first location of the day was a well-known school west of downtown. I've seen plenty of pictures of this place over the past few years and had to see it for myself. The massive school opened in 1928, the property taking up a couple of city blocks. It originally taught grades K-12 until 1965, when it became exclusively a high school. Attendance gradually dropped in the last decades of its operation and the school was eventually closed in 2004.

14. Our second location was a former theater built in 1924 and closed in 1972. Both live theater and motion pictures were shown at the theater. The theater was located at the rear of the building, with what looked like storefronts and apartments above them in the front section.

I really don't have anything new to show on the third location, which was a revisit for me. I was just there in August and not much has changed except the addition of new graffiti and part of the stage collapsing.

So we'll move on to the final location of the day, an elementary school that closed in 2006.

No gary methodist?

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

I did go to Methodist but I had already been there in August and it wasn't much different from what I posted then. Here's a few from this outing:

2. It's hard to see in this photo but the front part of the stage in the rear has collapsed since August. There was evidence of a small fire.

4. There's also a bit more graffiti in the sanctuary since August. Most of the colorful stuff wasn't there back in the summer.

Dude between the taggers and heavy foot traffic: everything in Gary is trashed, now. Even the curtain in the Palace got tagged.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but look at #12 and you'll see what I mean. It was a massive mural painted on the stage fire curtain that was one of the last remnants of the Palace's atmospheric theater design. It's slowly been falling apart since about 2011-12, but for over a decade's worth of heavy explorer traffic nobody fucked it up until now.

Exactly what I was thinking. Didn't know there had been a fire in there.
