...Would you?

So. There's this office building near me that's somewhat-recently been vacated- I'm eyeing up the place, but wondering whether I should just cut my losses and find something else.

The place looks really interesting, has kind of bizarre architecture, it seems like there'd be an awesome view from the roof, security seems pretty much nonexistent, I know someone who was somewhat familiar with the layout while the place was active, and, well- there's just kind of a dearth of places to explore around here in general, so the attraction is obviously strong.

On the other hand... the place is right downtown, along a fairly busy road and- I'm not sure if this is a huge negative or a complete non-issue- it used to be offices for a wing of the state government. That's mainly what's giving me pause.

They're completely moved out, they've taken all the lettering off the building and moved across town and all... but do you think the place would be under increased watch or something? If I got caught, would I get in extra trouble because of this?

What would you more seasoned explorers do in this case? I'm fine with giving the place a pass if need-be. (Even though that sucks.) Just wanna get a better idea of what I'm walking into.

I don't know which city you're in or when the downtown core is busy. But chances are there aren't people around 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I walked right into an abandoned state police barracks once. Tons of stuff laying around... the doors where open.
The silent alarm appeared to be active... I left

I wouldn't be TOO worried about the state government issue, although it depends on what agency, and whether they still own the property (if they ever did), and, obviously, your personal risk tolerance.

As for the building being in an active area, start by just trying the doors! There's nothing suspicious about that, and you'd be surprised how often it works. If that doesn't get you in, walk the perimeter of the building closely, looking for inconspicuous entries. Even keep an eye out for hatches or manholes in the ground right next to the building that might be accessible, or ladders or stairs that could give you roof access.

Last resort, it might be a place you need to pre-dawn (if it's worth it to you), meaning go around 4 or 5 AM when there's not many people out.

My friend and I have done a building on a main street in downtown providence several times. We went out for a few drinks, waited until the bars let out and the people cleared out and literally climbed a fire escape facing the main road. I did that building three times with no issue, time of day is everything

I don't know which capital city you're in, but if it's Albany, APD posts signs (a specific variety of No Trespassing sign - there are plenty of them on boarded up houses in Arbor Hill and Ten Broeck if you need an example) on the places they are focusing on patroling. Which are usually not the big abandoned buildings. There used to be one directly next to the Assembly and/or Senate office building, close enough that you could hear politics going on through the walls. As far as I know no one ever got caught there.

Hey, thanks for all the replies guys.

I've definitely considered just dressing up semi-nicely and seeing if I can't just waltz in like I own the place! I've noticed there are also a few side streets along the building- might be worth checking for alternate entrances out of plain view.

Did a lot of reading up on the place today and I learned that they're planning on demolishing the building if nobody buys it- that kind of indicates to me that they're probably not too concerned with the place anymore.

Definitely gonna head back and see what I can see when the weather clears up a little, with any luck maybe I'll be reporting back with some photos and a fun story.
