Just looking for peoples opinions on if i should make an Instagram page for urbex in my town to try and organize meetups and whatnot. Im also wondering if this is frowned upon in the urbex community, I would also post pics of my exploration and pics of other peoples exploration around my town if they want me to. All opinions and replies are appreciated.

I mean this in a lighthearted but serious way; just about EVERYTHING in urbex is frowned upon. You show people locations & you're putting the location at risk, you don't show people the location and you're a hoarder, or you just sit on the fence & you're dull as 2 minute noodles. I have an Instagram account, however most of my photos are 20+ years old and I'd never put up stealth locations until they were no longer doable. Cheers

To organize meetups and stuff, probably not. Instagram isn't really known for it's communication accessibility skills. Chances are trying to organize any sort of get together would be best done on Facebook... But if you were to use your instagram to post photos of cool abandonments and such? Sure why not. Just be careful about giving out location details publicly since you can't be sure who will end up seeing the info.

The largest issue with social media and abandoned places is ensuring that the comments are moderated. People will ask, people will tell, where to find places. It's almost a 24/7 process to make sure people don't spill the details. It's fine if you have 10 followers but when you have thousands of followers, just one comment can lead dozens of vandals to a location. I call it social responsibility... but not everyone agrees with that. And yeah, everything is frowned upon these days... you can do no right, you can do so many wrongs.

Exactly. The CC updated their CoE last year to include a Social Media condition. My input was exactly what you said. "PM me if you know where this location is. Will trade locations". I always delete these types of posts from my YouTube channel - although in most of my clips & photos the locations are either pretty basic or no longer doable. Cheers

Another point (obviously just my opinion & based on what's happened in Australia) is that in the 80s if you found a location that was hidden from graffitists & kids (kids that smash things anyway) then it was possible to keep it away from vandals for much longer (maybe even years). Eventually you'd tell someone you trusted who told someone they trusted who told someone they trusted that told a complete moron & pretty soon there'd be raves going on there & junkies squatting. Now days, locations don't stay secretive for anywhere near as long, so maybe hold some of your photos off until it's obvious people are already getting in. Or don't Cheers

I'm in, and looking forward to following along. Do your thing however you want to do it and make your own rules, you will never satisfy everyone and you will always be doing something that someone disagrees with. edited to avoid further harassment

Woah, have spam bots started making UER accounts? This is wild. It dug up a years old thread with no recent activity.
Archer - removed the quoted post so as not to give the spammed link any more exposure

Yeah and its really freaky how normal they are
|

Unfortunately, they're getting through with some regularity. We tag them as we see them, but it seems they'll make a bunch of normal (albeit simple) posts to start before going into spam mode so they're not as easy to track.
