When One Door Closes

One of the best locations in our area is finally seeing the early stages of demolition. So, we figured it was time to go check on a few other places that we had been meaning to get to.

The first spot on the list was a historic old building which once housed a manufacturer of high quality rugs. The company got its start around 1907 and moved to this location in 1910. I believe it was sometime in the 1940s, after changes in the style and manufacture of grass type rugs, when the buildings were sold to a candle company. The candle company occupied the property until its closure in 1966.

Over the years, it appears to have been used by at least a couple smaller outfits such as a tool maker and a steel parts producer. Judging by older photos, part of the place was demolished a while back. Also, one whole section of a warehouse area has had its roof removed and the remaining rafters clearly indicate a significant fire at some point in time.

All in all, the place is pretty well cleaned out and there wasn't a whole hell of a lot to see.

Our second and final stop was a neat older building that manufactured crutches and even coffins at one point (I think). I'm unsure as to the details of the closure and such. I haven't researched it too thoroughly yet.

Once again, this spot was pretty well cleaned out and not much was left behind.

The roof was definitely the highlight here. For being a smaller size building, there was a whole lot going on on the roof.

Despite the locations being somewhat bland, the adventure factor was a 10+. It felt good to be checking spots off the list. We hung out at each place for quite a while. Good times were had and beers were drank.

Cool Pictures. I love that you know about the history of the place that you visited. It makes everything so much more special if you can picture the building when it was in its heyday with people coming there and working 9-5. A lot of times I even like the empty places more. It gives a sense of land owner apathy. They cared enough to remove everything but not to sell or take it down. Very nice.

Never waste a day.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate your kind words and I agree. A little bit of research makes for a more intimate fascination with a place.
