A curious leftover of an obsolete manufacturing technology. Anyone ever explore one? http://www.atlasob...t_ts=1469714278464

We've got one leftover by the Lachine Canal here in Montreal. https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.4827764,-73.5714087,3a,75y,286.77h,94.59t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sD65rwNnJ xxYTS8UDkx5wlw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en Never did try to get into it.

I always wanted to see the Remington one, no idea what it's current status is though although I gather the factory has been flattened now.

The one in Philly was sealed up pretty tight. Not sure what kind of stairs they have in them.

I think but have not researched it that most of these 19th century facilities were replaced by something like this quite a while ago, its no longer necessary to let the lead fall that far http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=23396

Barry Kooda, there's someone we haven't seen lately, 2Xplorations... By the 70s shot Towers were obsolete. The towers tend to be constructed very well and are a curiosity. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_(pellet)#Bliemeister_method

The one in CT looks very doable (if the place is still standing). Never knew about the Philly one. Ed, you ever check it out?

Was the shot tower fire damaged? Anyone have interior pics of it? *groan* It should have been preserved.

It's been sealed by the Parks Dept. for decades, bro. Researching their design, they appear to be constructed similarly to coastal lighthouses, just with shorter storeys and more landings for the production of differing calibers of ammunition. The stairs also tend to hug the wall as opposed to being a central spiral, leaving the center open for the lead to fall.

Brick, concrete or wooden stairs? The PHL one is sealed tight as it gets unless you got a sledgehammer and some time to kill. Hard to believe there's not one interior image of one on UER...

Steel stairs, actually. The top fifteen-twenty feet is a ladder with a series of pulleys and platforms around it.

I looked around for info about the Montreal tower but details are scant. It was built by Stelco during World War II, apparently the only one ever constructed in Canada. The decline of the industrial area around the Lachine Canal began in the 1970s. By the 1980s the adjacent steel mill was gone and condos started going up in the area. The tower inspired a song by a legendary local punk/country band (sadly defunct now). United Steel Workers of Montreal: Shot Tower You might find some interesting reading at the links from this Wiki page. I clicked a few of them but didn't find any interior pictures.

That song was great; I really liked their sound. It's a shame they don't still play.

That's good to know, I'll have to factor it in some time. Nothing like that place in the UK.

England is not without... https://en.m.wikip...Chester_Shot_Tower https://en.m.wikip...se_Lane_Shot_Tower The most recently constructed one is in one in Cheese Lane. It may be doable... not to give you bad thoughts
