Completed in 1902, this apartment building was the largest in Cleveland at the time of its construction. There were 56 suites divided among four stories. It was built in seven sections (8 suites per section, 2 on each floor), each section separated by a fire wall. Each suite had a front living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen in the rear. At the time of its opening, apartments could be rented for $25 or $35. One section of suites was demolished in 2011. The rest has been slated for demolition for the better part of a decade but still stands. 1. Main entrance of the building DSC04340 by KMD1720, on Flickr 2. These tile mosaics were featured over the entrance to each section except the main entrance. DSC04347 by KMD1720, on Flickr 3. The rear of the building has fared much worse than the front. There were once balconies and fire escapes back here but they have been removed. DSC04349 by KMD1720, on Flickr 4. The front living areas were pretty small and had bay windows that faced the street. Very nice. Your effort to include the history makes this a much more interesting story
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. | |
What's up with the new windows? Someone renovating it or did they give up?

It's really cool to find a place that old; it looks like a pretty great explore. I especially love how the paint is peeling in 12.

Thanks for the comments guys! As far as the new windows, I'm not sure. A guy I talked to outside said they filmed a movie there right after they tore down the far west section so maybe it had something to do with that.

That is fantastic. I love the look of the building, and I love the included historical information. Thank you for sharing!

Looks like exploring the rear of the building would be a lot of fun. How was the structure? It seems like the kind of place where the floor might be a bit questionable.

Love the write up. Nice job!

The structural integrity wasn't too bad. It had a couple of weak spots but overall it wasn't a problem.

Neat, good to hear all was well. I'm a bit surprised, I'd expect an unkept building from 1902 to be doing a lot worse.

It's interesting to see what the toll fire has taken on the wallpaper. I haven't run into much fire damage on my personal excursions, mainly because the buildings that were targets of arson ended up burning down completely, which really sucks. I'm hoping these apartments were damaged unintentionally and not as a result of teenage mayhem.

Unfortunately, the fire was more than likely arson. The vast majority of fires in abandoned buildings are incendiary simply because of the lack of heat sources found in occupied buildings (untended candles, electricity, food on the stove, careless smoking, etc.). There aren't a lot of ways an abandoned building is going to ignite unless somebody goes inside and supplies that heat source.
