There is a whole post at http://imgur.com/gallery/KabxJ where this dude donned a mask and entered into the nuclear exclusion zone. Just thought that I would share with you all..

"Hey, if I wear a mask, I can't get cancer, right?" That's really cool though; it's amazing that barely anything has been looted.

awesome set. But I would have at least worn pants...lined with tin foil. :p

I'm actually a little jealous.

Really liked the story and the pics, not so sure I would have taken that chance tho... Oh well, to each his own.

Very cool experience, but his equipment seems to be a little lacking. Still, I would've totally done the same thing, albeit with a decent geiger counter/dosimeter and proper clothing.

Same. Although depending on how far from the power plant itself he is, it may not be as risky. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the Japanese authorities evacuated a large uncontaminated area around the contaminated area as a buffer zone, just to be safe. If he's near the edge of the exclusion zone, (if he got in on foot, that looks probable) then there might not be much, if any, radiation. Still, props to him for doing it, though I would have been a bit more paranoid about radiation myself.
"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there. | |

Fallout distribution is not linear and the exclusion zone is ever shifting. There's no safe level for plutonium inhalation. It's very toxic chemically too. It's a bone seeker that will stay with you to the grave. "In a leaked TEPCO report dated June 2011, it was revealed that plutonium-238, −239, −240, and −241 were released "to the air" from the site during the first 100 hours after the earthquake, the total amount of plutonium said to be 120 billion becquerels (120 GBq) — perhaps as much as 50 grams" Caesium-137 is no sweetheart. With a half life of 30 years it is a major health concern and is everywhere in the exclusion zone. It's a strong emitter of gamma rays... Strontium-90 is also present. It is a bone seeker and a nasty customer. Meh, no thanks. Not wise to poke your nose in a hornets nest and expect not to be stung. Without proper gear and denomination protocols this is a fool's folly.

Two things: 1. While it's better than nothing, a mask/gas mask is no more necessary in Fukushima than it is in any other abandoned area. In the time that's passed, most of the radioactive dust has already been absorbed into the ground. The dust that's in the buildings? Not radioactive, though it'll still give you a wicked cough (and/or cancer, if asbestos). That's not to say the place isn't still radioactive - it is, but most of the material (cesium, mainly) is in the ground, soaked into the concrete and asphalt, and plants, which absorbed it from the fallout rains through their roots and leaves. Most of the radiation you'll be dosed with will be around your feet, legs, genitals, and hands. 2. He's a looter. The imgur album is just a re-upload of what he posted to his Facebook (?!?). In comments there (since taken down), he strongly implied that he kinda-sorta-maybe pocketed some of the gold items he found, as well as other things . At the very least, he's sure as hell raising a big ol' flag and telling other looters to come hit the jackpot! What makes it worse is that he's taking/encouraging taking potentially radioactive materials out into the world - the local fence isn't gonna scan a ring for radiation, and the poor schmuck who buys it won't know about the cancer machine he just slipped onto his fiance's finger. It's one thing to be stupid and expose yourself to radiation carelessly - your life, your consequences. But this nonsense puts other people at risk, either from distributing stolen, radioactive goods into an unsuspecting market or by promoting careless entry into the Red Zone, which is sickening.

I was just coming here to post this.. I just saw this.

Hah, that makes it all even better. While the PR damage is still done, at least this means he didn't get his hands on any actual radioactive loot.

Well ain't he a piece of shit. Thanks for the update.

One of the biggest hazards is touching surfaces, handling or taking objects that are contaminated or have actually been irradiated and are now radioactive themselves. He's getting more than he ever imagined possible by his folly. None of it is good. Without a complete post visit decontamination there's no telling what he dragged out and absorbed... oops.

The green zone that he was actually in (whilst bullshitting about being in the 'off limits' red zone) is considered safe enough to be habitable, it's open to all so I wouldn't be too concerned just yet.

Of coarse with out a real time sweep the safety level is unknown which is why that area is restricted. Fallout isn't stationary. Either way, it's too late and to the bone done.
