The Sloth Gang and the Kennel

The other day, I was able to add two new abandoned houses to the list. The first one is far back from the road behind a couple of occupied properties in Canton. It was one of the most complete abandoned houses I've explored. From items left behind, we learned the names of the last occupants, their interests and a bit of their family history. The house was constructed in 1906 and may have been abandoned around 2000.

The second house is on a busy state route in Medina County, hidden from the road by tall trees and overgrown shrubs. Judging by mail we found in the house, somebody was running a small business out of it at one point. What made it unique was the amount of pet carriers and other animal-related objects including medication that we found in the basement and outside.

1. This stucco house was built in 1906 and is located on a fairly nice-sized slice of land that is now overgrown and partially wooded. It is behind two occupied houses and difficult to see from the road.

2. There was a lot of graffiti in the house; all of it looks like it was done by the same group. Most of it advertises the Sloth Gang, the number 666 and advises you to go away.

3. Something that gives me a bit of a connection to this house is that somebody who lived here was a NASCAR fan. This copy of the same magazine I subscribed to (before it ceased publication) is from the Sonoma race in 2000. There were also other NASCAR magazines, a half-built model car, a Dale Earnhardt poster and calendar. Most of the NASCAR merchandise was from the early to mid 1990s.

8. Books found in one bedroom made us wonder if somebody in the family was suffering from cancer. Somebody was also pursuing a bachelor of science in holistic nutrition. Books were a very common theme here, present in almost every room.

11. Another member of the family was into sewing. There were some half-finished projects and unused yarn in this bedroom.

12. In a final bedroom, we found some more pictures and a baby book of the couple's first child. According to the book, the father was 19 and the mother was 17 when they married. It included a family tree and other details.

13. The basement was small and cramped.

14. Our second house was hidden behind a large grove of trees. It is impossible to get a good picture of the front so here's the side.

17. There were two bedrooms in the rear of the house, both in bad shape.

18. There were no bedrooms upstairs, just one large room full of stuff, mostly clothing.

20. In the basement and out back were lots of pet carriers, pet medications and other animal-related objects. The basement smelled awful so we didn't spend much time down there.

I find the first house pretty interesting. Also, I recognize that ancient calculator sitting on the desk in picture 7; I have the same one here at home I use when I balance my checkbook.

I would try to get the baby book back to them. I wonder why they would leave it?

There are a few things in this house that I'm surprised got left behind. I do know the names of the former occupants but I haven't been able to find a current address or any contact info.

Wonder if the second house was used as some sort of puppy mill or breeding business of some kind of animal. Very sad thought!

Exactly!! I can see leaving behind unwanted furniture, cheap appliances and so forth but photo albums, books, daily clothing ??? In office settings, I've seen computer equipment, files, personal items, phones even X ray equipment in hospitals. Freakin' unbelievable!

Thanks for all the comments everyone. After all the houses I've been to that are more or less empty, it's always a treat to find one with so much stuff. It's just unfortunate that there's probably a sad story that goes along with it.
