I took a trip out to Half Moon Bay earlier today and stumbled upon some sweet UE on the way home. A few miles north of Half Moon Bay along Highway 1 is an old WWII lookout bunker eroding away from the hill. Learn more here: https://en.wikiped...e_%28California%29
As always, larger versions can be found on my website: http://photos.btra...Slide-WWII-Bunker/

A cool site and explore, but in my opinion the images of the fucking spray can doesn't do shit for the set or the bunker... Welcome to UER
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
This is the "south bunker", it used to be in better shape when parking along Highway 1 and "climbing" in the area was technically illegal, but now that the tunnel is open, and they have parking right there, well, it's been tagged badly in the past few years. Stories say they were going to build a hotel/motel here at one point but getting water/power was problematic, and after partially excavating some of the area, the project was abandoned. I haven't been to the "north bunker", nor seen it since they fenced it off, but it now has the same problem as this one, a walking trail, old Highway 1, runs right by it. Jeff

the north bunker is insanely awesome. completely inaccessible now unless you want to risk a hefty fine or arrest.

@blackhawk: Thanks for the welcome! The spray can makes for a good foreground in a set that mostly lacks them. Didn't mean to upset. Is it generally bad practice to show the tools of destruction on these sites? @SixbyFire Great writeup! Having stumbled upon this place by accident on my weekend drive, I didn't research nearly as much as usual. @RescueMe1060 Images require full membership. Not quite there yet.

Why would anyone other than a tagger think a can of spray paint in a defiled historic structure is worthy of an image? This isn't the first time you posted a pic of spray cans. Here's one that is just 3 spray cans from an early post:

Take pictures of what you want. It can't all be lonely chair photos.

Welcome to the PSW forum. If you're going to post spraycans at least let them be Montanas
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

Some people enjoy abandoned relics because they want a lens into the past. Graffiti, littering, arson, etc only serves to ruin this perspective. It also makes it a hell of a lot harder for sites to survive, so it's destructive beyond just the surface. Naturally, I don't want to see this happen anywhere, and in fact I've actually tried to reverse it by picking up trash on my way out. That said, I also really enjoy seeing how these spaces evolve. Alcatraz, for instance, has great history as a prison but also as a sanctuary to hippies and Native Americans. It's obviously a stretch to call graffiti and empty beer cans as noble a history, but it is what it is, and I can only capture a point in time. At Bayshore, I found children's toys, a suit of armor, and a bunch of spray cans, so I shot them all. I don't think photographing paint cans serves to perpetuate tagging... ...but I could be totally wrong. If it bothers the forum, I'll keep the spray cans off of it.

This was technically known as "Little Devil's Slide Military Reservation," though as Jeff notes, most locals know it as the "South Tower." Going by memory, it was a Base End Station (to allow the 16" big coast defense guns planned for Milagra Ridge, but never built) to aim accurately, *and* shoot even if the gun location couldn't see the enemy ships at sea due to fog) as well as a southern flank command post for Battery Davis at Fort Funston. It was built in 1943. Those of you familiar with the many other Base End Stations in the region know that the usual entrance/exit was via roof hatch. You see the regular walk-in entrance/exit to the rear here because officers were assigned to the S Flank CP, and it was considered undignified for officers to have to enter/exit via a hatch & ladder. At one time, there was a small power (generator) structure by Hwy 1, but that's long-gone. Again, I'm just going by memory here, but in the 1960s, there was plans to build a rather extensive housing development there -- that's why the area around the structure was excavated -- but the plans feel through. The site further N along the coastline is known as Devil's Slide, aka "Upper Devil's Slide" & was the Devils Slide Military Reservation back during WW-II. The old power station is along Hwy 1 and there were several Base End Stations, etc. plus a coast defense RADAR site up at the top. I just added old photos of mine to its database listing. It's suicidal to try to walk-up the 70+ year old, decaying steps along the steep slope, and in-fact, sadly, the Devil's Slide area is a popular spot for people to kill themselves by jumping off the cliff onto the rocks below. Clumsy me going up those steps -- then having to come back down them -- is still in the Top 10 list of Stupid /-/oolie Tricks. There are human bone pieces wedged into some of those rocks in the waterline, per the SM County SAR Team.
Sadly, I haven't been to the area since 2010, before the new tunnels even opened, so I don't know how that area is fenced-off, etc. & I know the old stretch of Hwy 1 at Devil's Slide was supposed to be opened up for walking/bicycling, but if you are loitering in that area, it's possible that someone may think you're considering jumping, so they may call the po-po...

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.
Fantastic summary, /-/ooligan! I hadn't realized the South tower was excavated, but rather thought it was a built atop the hill and then eroded away.

/-/ooligan: Thank you for adding your photos to the DB entry. Brought back memories for me.

Some historical info here: http://patch.com/c...de-a-short-history The Upper Devil's Slide is fenced off, but half-heartedly with a six-foot mesh fence that could easily be climbed or edged around the cliff face. It is also completely visible for 3/4 the entire length of the trail and as you said, those stairs looked like death. Had no interest in risking death or arrest for a base end station that are more easily seen elsewhere. I'm glad you did however
