How many of you guys do parkour and/or bouldering?

Seems like they would both be pretty applicable sports to UE, just wondering how many people are into these also! I myself have been bouldering for awhile, thinking of exploring a bit of the parkour world...

If you DO do these... do you have a story where it was applied??

I used to do boudering, but I slaughtered my ankle and I can't handle the falls anymore. The techniques and abilities to climb and such still come in handy though, just knowing how my weight will ships, how I can grab only things when I am climbing up through rafters, always making sure my transitions are going to be solid.

My friends and I used to do some parkour back in our high school days, so we were constantly sneaking onto roofs, etc.

It definitely helps to know how to scale/climb/hop/hurdle obstacles as quickly as possible, too.

It's nice to be able to walk... high risk ballistic movements will cripple you sooner or later.
Wear high top laced boots to help protect ankles and knees. Good for rehabbing ankles; wear them all the time.

You're preaching to the choir. I originally ruined my ankle when I was playing soccer and then it got to the point where I could no longer handle the falls from bouldering.

I fucked it up again when I went to MSP.

I now wear something similar to these, though.
They're waterproof, light weight, 8inch tops, side zip, overall the best boots ever.

Many runners I know had to quit not because of knee injuries but ankle instability. Very easy to do... too easy. Calf raises are good for rehabbing ankles too.
Biggest thing after a bad ankle sprain is not to nail it again. Tight laced high top boots will make the difference between a strained ankle and a full blow out. Surplus military high tops are cheap, good option.

I've been climbing for almost two years now and focus mainly on bouldering. I got into bouldering around the time I got into UE, but I did not pick up one as an accent to the other. They were both sports/activities that I just naturally enjoyed.

I don't believe that I personally have ever been in any situations where I felt my experience in bouldering allowed me to go somewhere special, somewhere that could only be accessed by the climbing-experienced explorer. I have, however, found that my climbing experience makes doing the simple things, like hopping fences and climbing ladders, easier. There isn't a ton of climbing in UE, and what climbing there is isn't all that difficult. I guess it helps, but it's not a skill I would label as essential to UE at all.

I got some surplus wellco military boots from (of all places) a local grocery outlet store for like 19.99. I am actually wearing them right now they are quite comfortable .

I have trouble staying balanced in the best of conditions. I've been known to trip over imaginary air molecules on flat floors with no debris, walking in a straight line in broad daylight. I also wear sturdy waterproof workboots with an extended ankle and a composite shell toe.

Does this condition worsen the more beers you consume ? If so I think I have the same thing going on ...

This post makes me want to invest in decent boots tomorrow as soon as I wake up... I've recently been exploring in Nike SB's and I KNOW for a fact that isn't good for my ankles

They help protect your lower cavles and feet from direct trauma including snake bites too. Tie off your pants to the boot; it keeps most of insects from climbing up on the inside and keeps you warmer in the winter. Treat your boots with silicone water repellent; now you can forge at least 1 inch of water without getting wet feet.

If you weight lift ditch the running shoes for boots especially when doing squats or any heavy work. Running shoes are too cushioned and don't provide a stable platform. Result is you waste energy, lift less weigh and risk serious injury especially doing heavy squats.

I have a couple pairs of high top laced boots. Mostly all I wear anymore.
Avoid cowboy boots; without laces they provide no ankle support and are unstable by design. I see guys wobbling around in the mud here in them, it's a pathetic sight. A lot of destroyed knees and ankles from cowboy boots being used for work boots.

Recently broke my foot. I only now realize that it's gonna totally screw up my bouldering/rock climbing/urbex plans for the summer. So. That sucks.

Ouch. Not being able to walk sucks worse...
What is it, stress fracture?

High top lace up boots will soon become your best friend...

Yeah, stress fracture. Not even from anything interesting. Just walking around. Lame.

Much better than a compound fracture
You did something. Usually a repetitive type injury however one good shot can do it.
Look at your shoes and what you've been doing. Toss any old ones. A good pair of lace up high top boots will help protect your feet, ankles and knees.

Get some 99% DMSO, med grade and apply 2X @day. Read up on it first. This is better than ice. Heat at night ie a heating pad on low may accelerate healing perhaps. If it feels better after a night keep doing it. Ice as much as you like; ice never hurts and increases blood flow, speeds healing, reduces inflammation.

Calf raises when able; building up the supporting muscle structures helps to strengthen/protect bone and soft tissue. Don't be pounding your feet... and avoid uncushioned flats, flops, and cheap shoes. Ballistic exercises are a known cause of soft tissue injuries, be very careful if you use them...

I boulder probably five times a week, and it comes in insanely handy. If it can be climbed, I will climb it.
