Not So Abandoned

As many of you know, I have gotten some great leads from local law enforcement. This place is one that they had described (poorly) for a while and I have driven by for years. Little did I know they were one and the same place.

A few days after the explore, I passed by again during the week and I noticed that the front gate was open. I drove in and looked for someone to talk to about the site but nobody was around. I found a phone number and made a call. As luck would have it, I got the owner who informed me that the site is NOT abandoned. He was however completely cool with my taking pictures and gave me some background.

The motel portion was built in 1955 and was initially the center of an artistic movement in Midland. By the late 1960's the place had become a part of the "Red Light" district and rapidly declined. By the late 70's it was a regular hot spot for murder and drug abuse and was eventually closed by the city.

Today the rooms are empty of anything save the collapsing roof. The rest of the land is used for a small landscaping business that the owner runs on the side. There is also a newer building that is used to house some of the owners antiques.

years ago we played a game here on the South Forum called Abandoned or Not?

The building with all the furniture in it is pretty new. Passing by I always thought it was a closed restaurant. There were some signs of use but then it goes back to that ancient UER debate of "What is an abandonment". While not abandoned it is definitely neglected.

The owner suggested a couple of places nearby that have some murals painted in the 50's and 60's that I may check out.
