Odd request (MN Folks)

So I haven't posted here in several months, because I'm working on a film project, which, is actually what has led me here. The team I'm with is working on a Star Wars fan film. When I say that, I say that hopefully with the understanding that I don't call a couple of kids swinging "lightsabers" at each other for ten minutes a proper fan film - we're raising the standard much higher than that (more in the Movies section if/when you feel like checking that out)

The reason I'm posting here, however, is that we're in the process of figuring out whether we want to build our own sets, or possibly shoot on location...somewhere. What we're looking for pretty much cries out for some place abandoned, but not so forsaken that our actors run the risk of falling through a floor or some other tragedy. Pretty much what we'd need is an out of the way area with lots of concrete structures with that familiar run-down feel.

I've been looking into Gopher Munitions at UMore Park, as well as a few generic underpasses in lowertown St. Paul, but we're also considering other options, should they become available. I'm wondering if anybody here has come across any other locations in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas that might possibly work? We're looking to go through legal channels, so I'm not asking anyone to break anonymity here, though if you wanted to serve as a sort of guide to warn the cast and crew of any inherent dangers within the location (should we choose to look into it further), that would also be appreciated.

Are you planning on permits? Are you planning on asking permission? Interior or exterior, day or night? Are you bringing in lightings or are you shooting available light? Props? (no english in star wars world, so you need to remove / replace signs) What is your daily driving limit to set? Are you willing to put up your cast/crew (friends) in tents or hotel rooms if there's better locations outside of a regular commute? What is your shooting schedule looking like?

I ask because, there's a big difference between getting permission to shoot a 'student film' for 5 days straight with a generator on site (which I have seen before) and sneaking you and 2 friends dressed in stormtrooper costumes into an abandoned building and hoping not to get busted.

We're professionals, actually. We're just shooting a fan film. Full-length. Concept artists, animatics, VFX guys, lighting guys, costume guy, fight choreographers, MUAs, sound guys, set builders, a storyboard artist, composer...and more.

We research the location first (finding out who to talk to in terms of setting up a liaison, setting one up, and touring the grounds/looking for potential hazards), then determine what logistics we'd need. I'm just searching for locations to research.

Ulands would be a good bet, I can think of several things out there that would work well. Call the city, see what they say.

Ulands or "Umore Park" is owned by the U of M, although they've basically washed their hands of it after "suddenly discovering" that an abandoned ammunition factory somehow had contaminated soil (imagine that). It is patrolled off-and-on, there are various law enforcement training sites on the same property. You could try contacting these people for permission:

I recall quite a bit of grafiti, which will be a problem for underpasses as well. The U might be OK with you painting over it for background shots.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

A bunch of years ago I tried to get permission for a production out at the ULands.

They wanted insurance and other professional stuff that was WELL out of our league, but they seemed happy to work with us.

ulands is good. if you can set up your crew within a 12 hour drive 1 week on site, sunflower ammunition depot in east kansas would be even better.

The port of Minneapolis isn't exactly abandoned, but it's pretty run-down/rusty and it might not be too hard to get permission to film there since it's rarely busy.
I assume you guys already have a DP, etc, but if you need someone to run B camera, etc, I might be willing to help out.

Wait, that's *not* abandoned? I stumbled across that place when I used to deliver pizza in Mpls a few years ago (sometimes if it was slow, I'd just joy ride around) and got a picture of the place, but never knew what it was and forgot where it is.

Sadly, I've managed to develop some mental health issues and had to remove myself from the project, and it was decided that one of the guys is going to be partitioning a 80'x12'x20' section of a horse arena on his property for building a set, anyway, so on-location isn't happening. Less cool/fun, but less red tape, too.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. (I'll have to check out that place in Kansas if I'm ever down that way)

Was this for the Star Wars: The Recompense fan film by any chance?

Indeed it was/is. Out of curiosity, how did you hear about it? I'm guessing you either went to the panel at Con or you know someone on the cast/crew (or you are one of the cast/crew...)
