Avoid them if you can. And if you don't feel safe somewhere, take that to heart. Fear is there for a reason and will save your rear more often than not. I haven't run into many problems with the druggies, but I try to stay prepared. I wad up 5 or 6 $1 bills individually and jam then in my pocket. Then, fold up a couple of $5 bills. That way I can tell them by feel instead of looking if I reach in my pocket. The $1s get them away if they're bumming. The $5s can bribe a new location out of them if they're friendly. Cigs never hurt, but small bills help more, to me. And always have a contingency. Just don't go by yourself and don't turn your back on them.

Private property = 4 D cell mag light and bear spray (the big can that looks like a fire extinguisher)

Public property = 4 D cell mag light and 40cal

Don't forget to be careful for used needles lying around the area..those can be extremely dangerous. I would not touch anything on the ground there and wear sturdy shoes that can protect you from a spare needle in the wrong spot.

Meh, people are trouble. If you know there are people there avoid them.
If they are looking to score and you have enough high dollar gear to enable that...

I did a lot of street shooting. People were my favorite. Shot bikers and gang bangers before. It's all about how you carry yourself and how you approach them. Many times I just would nod and jester with the cam, not say a single word. They either smile, frown or even pose.

I would carry my pro body cam in my hand by the lense neck. With a 70-200 L lense it makes a nasty face full of metal. Never had to do that.
Personally I never hand out nothing especially if someone comes up to me. Cons case you like this; a shark taking a nibble deciding if to bite.
What works for me may not work for you...

I'm to lazy to see if anyone said what im about to say but, besides saying that your not invading their home and you're not a cop, honestly not much. I mean, they're high, so they could be dangerous. I ran into a drug deal alone once. It only got bad because they knew I knew what they were doing. Just act like you don't care or act oblivious but be aware because they're dangerous. As long as they know you're not there to cause harm im sure you'll be alright. Good luck!!

(to or too?) You should read the posts in a thread before jumping in.
Drug addicts are unpredictable especially meth heads. Many are career criminals and thinking happy thoughts doesn't cut it when dealing with them on their turf if your shit is weak.

Sometimes if you're in really shady parts of town, gangs will occupy abandoned structures. And some of them would rather kill you than go to jail, let's just say that. Even if you have no intention of alerting the authorities, they don't know that. BUT it isn't likely that someone would get killed on an explore. Just be careful haha

I would just keep an ear out. Especially if you're in a bad area. Generally druggies aren't too harmful, unless they're cooking stuff, which they don't want you to report and could resort to violence without hesitation. Most just want to get away from society. I think the real concern is gangs

I've encountered druggies/drunks. They've all been pretty friendly. Offered me a hit of weed/meth or some booze. Politely declined, talked to them a bit. They aren't too problematic, but then are usually just there to smoke/drink, not live there.

This reminds me of a game I played once. I believe it was called Roulette.

In other words, like so many other things, how you respond and how they respond really depends on a ton of variables. Things that are pretty static and unchanging (demographics), like your location, are you urban or rural, even what part of the country are you in (or what country are you in). Other issues have to be assessed quickly and are more fluid. Are you around any gang territory, what is the predominate drug used locally, the ages of the people in question, escape routes, are you alone, etc. etc. I've rarely run into other people, but I've never had a bad experience. A couple times I assessed the situation and stuck around, a couple of times I didn't. Just never let your guard down and remember that people - especially those under the influence or aspiring to be under the influence (on your dime) - can be very unpredictable and are probably much more adept at playing the game than you are.

Fluid is the key word here.
It's the game that moves as you play it.
I've gotten into sketchy situations and played them right... and didn't get played.
Best scenario; hear them, smell them, see them before they do you.
Avoid when possible and observe.

Meh, one wolf pack can ruin or whole day... people are trouble

I'd be careful carrying that on your hip unless it's under your shirt. If a junkie/cop/owner sees that it could elevate the situation. Best to carry a small bottle or use something else less obvious.

A friend of mine got in a pretty sticky situation because he had a knife and pepper spray on his hip clearly visible when he ran into the owner and then later the police

I never carried pepper spray and I've dealt with some vicious canines at work. It's inhuman to use on canines; they'll rub their eyes in the gravel to try and stop the pain.

Humans can understand the pain is harmless and work through it.
If you need to carry it, you aren't ready and shouldn't be there.
It wouldn't stop some and it may end up disabling you more than them.
Then you're really fucked.

I've never had to use a weapon while exploring in over half a century.
A good walking stick is one of best weapons you can carry in plain sight.

I usually go with a polite nod in their direction. A conversation if they head my way. Worst that's happened is getting slowed down by a surrealist conversation.

I do carry a small knife but I've never used it as anything more than a sharp screw driver.

druggies lol.. just stare right at them and walk right at them, slowly

most of them freak and run haha at least the kind you find hiding in abandonments

disclaimer: don't try this with druggies who are also members of an outlaw M/C your results may vary

There are a ton of great (and hilarious) suggestions on this thread.

Here are my 2 cents:

1) If the spot you are exploring has an abundance of dead bodies, I'd say steer clear. Obviously it's not abandoned, and not only will it be filled with folks who DON'T want to be known, it will also be filled with a lot of human waste.

2) Regarding self defense- Pepper spray... I guess. Most junkies on meth won't feel the effects unless you get some Bear spray or some Dog the Bounty Hunter pepper spray foam (and his sunglasses!) A mag light is a good option but that means you'll need to be real close to make a hit count, and you run the risk of missing and having it taken away and used on you.

As for a knife, a knife should be part of your kit already for utility reasons, but once again, to use it as a self defense weapon you run into a few issues: You need to be at close range to use it. One hit from knife usually isn't enough to down an attacker high on meth and adrenaline. You run the risk of having it taken away from you by the tweaker and then you're really in a bad situation.

Be cautious. Be smart. And really ask yourself, "Why do I want to explore a building filled with junkies that are pissing and shitting and bleeding all over the place?"

I've only encountered one once, and we just ended up leaving the place. He was upstairs and we heard someone rustling around and assumed it was other explorers but then we smelled weed and some other substance and they asked who was there so we decided it was best just to explore a different building.
