Last year we were planned all summer to access this tunnel system that was basically built to put a creek underground rather than it running through our downtown back in the early 1900's. We always had problems with people being around since it opened out in between two residentials but during the superbowl last year we finally got a chance to get down to it, too bad it started to rain.. Maybe sometime this year we'll get in.

In my opinion, the best time exploring (based on experience) is the winter. It is extremely cold which means less people will be out at the location, weather to explore or just in the vicinity. The cops or security will patrol less and when it snows, you can see where people walked/drove and when.

Agreed.... 3:00 am is a good dead zone time also... Another trick... if you did get caught, play dumb like you had no idea that popping up manholes was illegal.

Amen to that! I love being able to see what it looks like with that tad bit of color, but still sort of bleak1.
I see life in pictures, so why not take as many as you can, in as many places as you can?

Despite the downside for photography, overcast is my favourite so the heat doesn't kill you. If the majority of the exploration is indoors its even better when there a cool mist in the air.

Wow, way to read my mind (Seriously, I had been thinking about asking this same thing, but have started numerous threads recently and decided to give it a rest  )...
I am much more of a mid to late autumn person. As you said, you can layer up more (though less in the fall), which serves a dual purpose of protection. However, you also don't have to worry about the freezing cold/wind nor is there ice in some locations (yeah, that was almost an expensive slip).

I like spring time. It's not busy as people are just coming out of hibernating, the temperature is not too cold or too hot, and you don't have to contend with two feet of grass or two feet of snow.

I was just thinking:
It's not necessarily the best time for photos or the best time to get quality exploring done, but my favorite time to be in an abandonment is sunset. Just a nice feeling: night closing in, slightly rushed, colors in the sky, twilight... And, if I'm exploring at that time, it's usually when the outing starts to come to a close, so there's a poetic feeling of finality.

I've never considered that snow could be an advantage, that is an excellent point. There is a site I was looking at recently, but the snow would be a dead give away to the point of entry. It's really a catch 22.
But I like what Artemis pointed out. I think time of day (particularly late night/early morning) may rely on how late bars are open in your area. I'm sure patrol schedules are somewhat based on that.
But in general I would be curious to know who prefers day vs night? Is it consistent, or dependent on the site? If it depends, what factors to you consider? I'm a photographer so generally day offers more possibilities though I'm beginning to enjoy night photography as well.

Above ground, in an abandonment, I absolutely prefer daytime. You can see the holes in the floor, you can shine your lights pretty well anywhere without worrying too much about it, easier to work with if it's a camera trip. That being said, once I'm familiar with the place I'll totally hang out until dark to catch a good skyline or just hang out.
Above ground, active, most everything is easier in the day, though there is power in playing the "harmless drunk" if you're caught after hours.
Underground can be any time, because it doesn't matter. Sometimes daylight brings an unexpected shaft of light, which can be nice, but in general it's all night underground.

I haven't explored in winter - at least not with snow to contend with - but I'm hoping that, for the reasons listed, it shouldn't prove too much of a challenge. There doesn't seem to be much you can do in the way of hiding your tracks but with it being so cold hopefully patrols will be less frequent.

I used to explore all year, though the snow the last few years has made it harder to go places. It's tough to get in somewhere when it's surrounded by 6 feet of snow. I prefer summer for the warm days and lots of light to work with. Makes the traveling easier as well.

In the south, winter means no snow (usually), no bugs, no poison ivy (foliage), less vegetation, and fewer people around. But seriously, whenever I can explore it's the best time for it.

So far, exploring in the winter has served me well. People keep to themselves inside and I get to hop about on buildings without worrying about it. Especially once it hits nighttime. Then I have pretty much any block outside the city to myself. (:

Personally I start off my exploring season in early to mid spring and let it run until late fall. I've never done a winter explore because I hate the bitter cold we get here. Especially when it bites in and seeps into my back and joints and everything. To me exploring is only fun when my body can sufficiently function. As for hours, I've always preferred daytime but if it's a location I know well dusk is nice too.

Shit, I'd have to say about any free time I get without any appointments making me watch my time. I hate having a time limit. Plus I'd have to say autumn also.

This thread has changed my perspective. I've always thought winter was bad because of the cold and snow, but maybe on days where it's at least double digits and its not snowing, winter is the better time to go. Except maybe footprints in the snow.
