Clothing/Philadelphia

Hi, I'm a new member here, I've done some Urban Ex over the years, but never really posted or wrote much about it. In the future I'd like to do so, but right now I'm here for something else. I'm an Industrial Design student in Philadelphia and I'm beginning work on my capstone project, which is clothing for Urban Exploration. Through the research we've done so far, we haven't really found anyone that makes clothing or equipment for this area. I was hoping members on here would be able to tell me some of the things they consider when picking clothing and equipment for exploring or if there's anything that just sucks about exploring that you wish could be fixed. I'm open to any and all ideas and feedback from anyone on here. A lot of this research I could do on my own, but I think it'll be a stronger project if I can get feedback from other people, who might have other approaches to exploring than myself.
Also, if there is anyone in the Philadelphia area who'd be willing to work with us to give us feedback on designs and help us do research that would be ideal.

Yea i dont think there is a company that makes clothing just for exploring...lol. Unless you consider Hot Topic if you want to dress in all black for night time stuff.

Well, my clothing depends where i'm going. If i do city exploring, ill either wear pants or shorts with sneakers, depending on the weather. But if i go to a hospital thats surrounded by woods, i'll wear pants and boots. I usually wear some kind of bdu pants, jeans or cargo shorts. I usually pick tough clothing that won't rip easy.

As far as equipment goes, Home Depot sells whatever you need to fulfill your exploring needs. Or any camera store.

You'd probably get more feedback looking for exploring clothing, instead of 'equipment'.

The problem is the second you start making clothing or equipment specifically for urbex, people start freaking out and screaming "sellout", and the thread here usually turns into a giant flame war

the thing with this hobby, is its alot of DIY, and I think thats part of the fun... 9 times out of 10 the clothing isnt so much the focus but what you add to it like some people like tactical vests, others like a sturdy backpack, I personally use military surplus ammo pouches, like a heavy duty fanny pack

The one thing I could suggest is shoes, I know for me finding a rugged, comfy pair of shoes that look good but are water proof, maybe nail resistant with a steel toe would be nice, like a combat boot that you could run in like a sneaker

The closest thing I ever found was the skateboarding sneaker company Globe made a high top sneaker out of construction boot material, they were part of the Mojo series the sole and inside was all sneaker, the tread was sneaker tread, but they looked like and took a beating like construction boots, they even have construction boot laces.. but they were light like a sneaker, and they were warm in the winter... they are great shit kickers that you can run like lightning in

I think I messed up the quoting thing, but

I haven't gone through most of the threads here, but I figured that would come up, I've seen the same thing through skateboarding forums. At this point in time it's just a project for design class and not something that would necessarily go into production. It's not my intention to abuse urban exploration in any way for profit. Rather I'd like the clothing to help facilitate urban exploration in a respectful and safe way (that sounds like the way a parent would say it, but I can't think of a better way to phrase it).

A coating that keeps off Asbestos ;) Just kidding. Something tough. Reinforced knees since there is a lot of crawling or climbing. I've had a lot of rips from flesh eating windows. Just something durable but comfortable. And maybe a hidden pocket for an SD card ;)

I was just thinking today that I wish my clothes were all as tough as my backpack. It's one of these: http://www.chromei.../cardiel-fortnight

They're seriously unbeatable as far as I'm concerned, especially since they come with a lifetime warranty. I have a lighter backpack from them as well that I use for short hikes, and I violently overstuffed it and ripped one of the seams last summer. Totally my fault, unrepairable, and obvious what happened, but the guy at the shop just gave me a brand new one anyway.

I've always had good results with denim and heavier sneakers. The last pair I trashed were some of the Onitsuka Tigers with the thick hard rubber sole (not the squishy foam ones, those are fucking useless for even long walks). Boots are cool for some situations, but if there's any fence climbing involved, they're a pain. Those shoes Mike D posted look super fucking badass.

As a few other people have said, it is personal preference and comfort.

When I've gone out exploring, I usually have a pair of jeans or lightweight long pants and a shirt/hoodie I don't particularly care about if it gets damaged or not. If I am planning just external photography, I wear a pair of sneakers, but if it is around demolition/internal, I have a pair of steel-toe boots (also great for protection).

I usually have just my camera bag, though I've begun looking into one of those camera backpacks.

I've seen mention of props, stuff like car decals, clipboards, reflective vests, etc, which makes it appear as though you have a business related reason for being there.

You've also got various gear, which are mentioned in a couple threads on the site (I'd recommend giving them a read through). Though you'd have to avoid 'tools', as that creates a legal issue if you're caught on an exploration. Same goes for anything that could be considered weaponry.

TLDR: While the idea is an interesting concept, I think a lot of UErs are more likely to hit their local thrift store than a shop geared towards the hobby.

I'd really like to see jetpacks become more available for those hard to reach locations. Or maybe cloaking devices?

I would totally buy a cloaking device if this guy can make it happen.

Anything good for working in mines/quarries, wilderness survival/exploration, military ground ops or cave spelunking should work well for urban exploration.
Waterproof heavy-duty construction/industrial boots, many-pocketed cargo pants made from heavy-duty rip-stop or canvas, a similar shirt/jacket made from the same material, again with many pockets and some sort of protective head-covering should work well.
I'm in Philly. Hit me up in a PM for anything I may able to be of assistance with.

I was thinking more like this...

Czech army jacket, canvas cargo pants, all-terrain hiking shoes, protective welding hair cover.

I think that is a US M65 Field jacket Ed. From the pockets, to the cut, to the draw string bottom it looks like my OD M65. Then again the could be a Czech copy of US Equipment.
