according to my bosses, the site is now a national historic site. However the site is not officially becoming one until the site can be surveyed by crews to determine what needs to be done.

Much 'surveying' has already been done. Going to need a ton of work.

once its done, then it will be officially announced and then the site will be rebuilt.

sadly then it will become much more difficult to go see.

Of course it will be more difficult to see -- but at least it wont be just another housing development, or an open field.

I'm down if it's being restored. I mean, historic sites are boss - it should be pretty easy to get into it, we'll likely just have to pay a fee (like 10$ maybe) and then tour the site as we please.

Most historic sites are done like that, with information placards and 'do not cross' ropes to protect sensitive areas.

Is this worth a 3 hour drive to visit in the near future, or is this place now sealed tight due to this sequence of events?

I thought it was. Especially if you check out another good location in the area.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"

Good to see it's being saved! Hopefully it'll be turned into some sort of museum!

Also: I highly admire the staff at Parks Canada, I have spent many a weekend at historic sites (mostly 19th century forts) and other sites.

As I'm totally unfamiliar with the area and not a full member, would it be possible to message me the location? We leave tomorrow am.

Just got back. Didn't hit any second location because we spent much more time than planned there. Man, that place is just totally trashed, even some punks doing their handy work while we were there. Felt like letting the air out of their bicycle tires.

It's not really locked up tight. It's still pretty easy in general to access. Though I'm highly confused by all the dug up rocks and boulders laying around lately. Also the cops have been there more frequently lately. I got slapped with a nice trespassing ticket last time I was there
