New Addition To The Fleet
< on 8/1/2014 1:56 AM >

Since life has sucked without a beater car, I have once again found a dog to buy and beat mercilessly. Say hello to the newest addition to the fleet:

https://www.facebo...720&type=1&theater

it's a 2000 Subaru Outback wagon.
5speed, awd, 152,000 miles.
body and floorpan are solid as are the service lines (fuel, brake)
it has a... tapedeck ?
and the A/C doesn't work, but the cruise, power seats, windows, and locks work. The rear wiper is M.I.A.

I got it for $1500... i am visiting my friendly credit union tomorrow for the funds to procure this little dog.

Nice! I got some tapes for the tape deck if you want them.

Forgot to say; you likely know all about how the 2.2 is virtually bombproof, and the 2.5 has head gasket issues... Either way, you done good, regardless which engine you have. Almost bought one of these a few years ago. 500.00 bucks, but it had been sitting, with some kind of leak, so had mould and other issues. Still was likely an okay little project. Yours obviously appears in good shape. Always liked boxers.

Fond memories of my '81 4WD wagon. Drove it up mountains, across rivers, high centered once, amazing car, despite that Subaru couldn't build a decent manual trans to save their life back then.

I had a '99 2.5 RS coupe, and a '96 or '97 (Can't remember) Impreza Outback. Loved them both. I bought the Outback for $100 and had it for 2 years without a problem. Aside from the shifter falling off of the tranny.

are the engines in these things interference?
basically I have no idea when the timing belts had been or even if the HAVE been changed and want to know what kind of damage I am looking at should they snap.

They are, but I've actually seen a couple survive belt failure. Somehow.

Great choice sam, I love subarus. Ive been rocking this buggy for about six months now I love it. Its a 98 legacy gt wagon five speed, I also just got the 93 legacy in a trade but unfortunately its owner neglected to cover the rear window after it broke so it created a greenhouse in the back, not sure its fate yet.

yeah the 2.5 is interference I think the schedule is 60k to change them. mine has 160k and no records of timing belt but ive been having random overheating issues with mine so im going to pull the engine and do all the gaskets and belt/waterpump etc. BTW if you plan on doing a timing belt (I would) the kit on amazon.com from felpro is much cheaper than even my cost I get through my shop. Headgaskets/timing belt/water pump etc. plugs etc. will be in the 400 dollar range assuming your doing the work yourself. Or around 225 for the timing belt and water pump, its an easy job hardest part is getting the balancer off but they make a tool to hold it while you break the crank bolt loose.

Did my first head gasket replacement job - on a friends subaru , which he then proceeded to nail someone in their front fender making an illegal left turn in, best part of th accident though - CRV Honda - front of it was all crumpled - his legacy? Still daily drives it. went to a yard for a new grill.

threw a CHECK ENGINE light on the way home from work last nite. Doesn't seem to be running any different, so nothing major.
Problems with the car: the brakes are just shot. During application, i really wonder if they're going to stop the car. The engine smells like oil is leaking somewhere but the coolant gauge still stays on the low side of the middle peg, even climbing hills. Clutch is weird, all there, but has a weird engage point and almost feels too slow (my Cruze suffers from the same thing). The tires are shot even though they have good tread. Passenger side front has a ping-pong sized bulge in the sidewall. The A/C doesn't work, but that might be due to a deplete charge... i'll fuck with that on Friday when I have a day off. As for doing the work myself? No. There is a Subaru specialist over in New Haven, Vermont I will probably have do the work; Junction Subie Center I think they're called. There is also a Subaru specialist in Vergennes VT, Auto Creek is their name.

All in all, it's comfortable, rides ok. The car feels heavy. Oh and does anyone have a front fascia off a 2000 Outback? Mine is broken.

Sounds like a reasonable buy! No rot on a Subie that old down here is even a miracle.

Sounds like you bought a gem sam. The driving greenhouse I just got sounds like it has less problems plus the A/C actually works (I couldn't believe it)!
