Just to be clear: We are not forcing anyone to give out more information or change their habits when they post a location.

This new rule is entirely about not harassing and bullying new explorers if your idea of what is good to share differs from theirs.

Asking nicely and trying to educate a poster about my philosophy of discretion is now also against the rules, correct?

This is unfortunate. I would argue, though it may be counter-intuitive, that the people who post photos without discretion are acting like they own the place, not those who would try to limit exposure by asking someone to take down a post.

Of the two sides, those who post information indiscriminately are more self-centered: "I went to _____ place. These are photos I took. Here is more proof that I visited this place before you, etc" Worst case scenario here is said location gets too much exposure with the end result being that no one can visit the place any more.

Those who call for less publicly shared information don't directly prevent anyone from actually exploring by going out into the real world and investigating their surroundings. They are just keeping the place accessible for those who would legitimately seek it. Worst case scenario here is that those who are motivated to find said place have to put in a little more effort (eg. explore, a common cause of having more fun.)

This is a case of selecting the lesser of two evils.
To say that you are choosing the lesser evil by promoting "free exchange of information" vs. "censorship", you would be incorrect, because what you have implemented is censorship in lieu of trusting the individual poster to make informed decisions that arise from respectful discussion.

I appreciate all of the opinions expressed in this thread. This issue is one that I have been struggling with for many years. I have decided that I prefer the path of less bullying, and less of people being asked to "censor" their posts. The decision has been made. Thus, the thread is now closed.
