County Poorhouse

Built in 1878, this enormous four-story structure was originally a poorhouse for families who couldn't afford their own homes. It was shut down in 1953 due to questionable structural integrity. In 1957, it was purchased by a Bible college who repaired the building and used it as their campus until 1988. For about ten years, it sat neglected until somebody began using it as a haunted house. A portion of the rear of the building collapsed in 2006, forcing the haunted house to a new location. More recently, a second section of the building has collapsed. Fences and trespassing warnings appeared after the owner kept catching people there. The haunted house only used the first couple of floors and most of their stuff was hauled away when they moved to another location. They never touched the upper floors which still have leftovers from the Bible college. There are over 90 rooms in the building and there's something a little different about most of them.

4. The first thing I saw upon entering the building was a chair spilling its stuffing.

5. The first floor had been used by the haunted house. Sections of the walls were painted with various ghostly scenes.

6.

7. Many of the rooms on the second through fourth floors still had wardrobes, chairs, mattresses and other items from the Bible college dormitories.

8. The main staircase.

9. The bathrooms have been completely destroyed. The shower stalls have been torn apart and the toilets were all ripped out of the floor.

12. There was a ladder that led to the attic where I found old bed frames and darkness. Another ladder led to the roof but it looked very unstable.

14. Behind the poorhouse was an auxiliary building with pieces of wood inside.

"Oh, I know what I'm going to do today! I'm going to rip the crappers out of an abandoned building and punch holes in the shower stalls!"

Sometimes they make me wonder.

I do love me a good history lesson.
