The unattended school

Built in 1919, this rural school sits neglected in central Ohio. It's intention was to provide a quality education for students who didn't live in city school districts and replace the one-room schoolhouses. It served the area until the mid-1970s when the schools were consolidated. Now it sits wide open and full of junk. At some point, it appears to have been used for storage. Despite the fact that two of the three stairwells have crumbled, the rest of the building seems structurally intact. There are several houses nearby but nobody seemed to mind me hanging around.
1. The exterior. It's a little hard to see, but there's a tree growing in the bell tower.

2. Welcome! Walk right in...

3. The first floor was divided into a girls's side and a boys's side. This was the girls's

4. The boys's side

5. All of the classrooms had at least some stuff in them. Most still had a place for the boards on the walls.

6. This classroom had lots of children's items including a doll and a car seat.

7. One of the classrooms-turned-storage rooms. The rope is the thing in this picture that makes me wonder.

8. All of the cabinets and shelves I saw in the school still had various items occupying them.

9. One room had lots of books in it. Unfortunately, not all of them were still in as good of shape as these.

10. More books and toys

11. Most of the toilets had been destroyed. This was the girls's restroom. The boys's was similar.

12. The damaged stairwells were on the east and west sides of the school. These doors kept creaking in the wind.

13. I made a new friend.

14. The auditorium took up half of the second floor.

15. I caught this on the way out.

I enjoyed the hour or so I spent at this school. There are plenty of interesting artifacts lying around although most of them have nothing to do with education. Nothing is really going on in that area and nobody seems to pay any attention to the school so it probably will continue to sit unattended indefinitely.

Those types of buildings are always a bit eerie. You can stand there, close your eyes for a bit (if you feel safe in the location ;)) and imagine what was once there...

Schools have always been among my favorite abandoned locations. One of the great things about being in Ohio is that there are plenty of them around. This one in particular definitely had an eerie vibe to it with the isolation, toys, religious artifacts and some poetry that I found. And of course those doors that wouldn't quit creaking.

I love this location! The more random artifacts, the better! And yes, that doll is super creepy...looks like it's a "talking" doll judging from the holes in its tummy. Would be even creepier if it still worked!

Thanks for sharing!

Well, that would be one way to scare off explorers: Rig up the doll to say (in a gruff, male voice), "Hey you! Yeah, YOU!! Get out of my building!!"
