Exploring, as most of us know, requires caution and planning to be done properly.
Walking for 30 minutes down traintracks with little clearance in the middle of the night with two flashlights, however does not. Oh, and did I mention that the group had 9 people in it, with the only somewhat experienced people in group being my friend and I? Even better, when we reached our destination, the forest glenn seminary, (kind of a joke explore at this point, but whatever), everyone got scared and left after 15 minutes, then literally 5 minutes later started talking about how exploration is the best shit in existence. Sounds fun, doesn't it?

That was, of course, an arranged meet-up and more or less everyone had years of exploration experience. However, for a normal exploration having such a large group could easily turn into a disaster.
Last spring in Svalbard, it was often annoying when I wanted to check out stuff in the abandoned Soviet settlements and the others wanted to head back to the settlement. Since we had just one rifle, I had to follow the others. Everyone was always interested to visit the sites, but no-one was really interested to really explore them...

The first time I ever went exploring in an abandonment was in a group. It was October 10, 2012. I remember that, because it was the night that Amanda Todd killed herself, and the two guys that was with were trying to find er nudes on the internet all night afterwards. At the time, I was seventeen, and before that, I had only gone in tunnels. I had nothing to do, so I went over to my friend's house and we smoked hookah for a couple hours. After a while, I had the idea that we should go explore an abandoned building near the highway where we lived. They had never done it before either, so they were pretty excited about it. We waited for another friend to get off work, then we left around 7 when it was really starting to get dark. It was going alright at first, but the one girl that we were with was really nervous and afraid to do anything like go in the basement, or go up the stairs because she was terrified that she was going to fall. The other guys that we were with started breaking things, throwing rocks through the windows, and they also spray painted all over the place. It was pretty fun, but I never really went exploring with them again.

I had been eying an abandoned elementary school for a few weeks. During that time I had posted photos on my Instagram of other abandonments and one of my friends had been begging me to take her somewhere. I stupidly decided to take her to the elementary school. We climbed through the window and less than 2 minutes later she told me she was too scared. I literally begged her to let me stay but she said she was just gonna wait outside. Obviously that was gonna attract attention so I just said fuck it and left. I realize this isn't a group exploring disaster, but I have never explored with more than two other people.

Half a group boated into a morning glory spillway, while the other half rappelled in from the top (~300 ft). Boat group got in with no hitches. Part of the top group got in, but someone fell the last 30 ft and broke their leg, right about the same time the police showed up to question the remaining top group.
I think that qualifies as a potential disaster.

No matter how "experienced" you are (and I use that term loosely because what defines 'experienced'? Only Full Members on here? PFFT...) there is always that paranoid douche explorer with "the same" or "more" experience than you telling you to "Turn off that light!" or "Get off that ledge, you're skywriting yourself." Seriously??? Exploring in groups IS a disaster (even if everyone came out fine) when you have pretentious pricks who think the whole world is focused on the little ants we really are.

If you're running around somewhere at night...there could be a very good reason for someone to tell you to turn your light off.

Largest group I've gone with was 7, and I swore never again just based on the issue of keeping track of everyone. I don't like anything over 3, 4 is tolerable only with certain people.

Nailed it.
I've been to Norwich with giant groups before, but it was never a huge issue because it was post-fence and cops didn't give a shit about the property so once you were inside the fence, you were golden and had free reign to do whatever. But aside from those instances, I like to keep my exploring outings to four people tops. Anything more than that and it gets messy.

i once went exploring a mine with a group and this older explorer was guiding us. i should have realized trouble was brewing when he had an issue remembering how to get in the side entrance, but eventually we figured it out so whatev, we continued. a ways into the place the older guy stopped and said, "i have no memory of this place" and i thought to myself 'well shit'.
we pressed on and eventually found this chamber to rest in, and then suddenly one of our party accidentally knocked a bucket down a shaft and it fell really, really far and made a lot of clanging -- and a few moments later we started to hear a distant booming of drums in the deep that gradually got louder and nearer.
we came under attack and had to fight our way frantically towards the exit. as we got to this one place where we were nearly free, there was a bridge across a huge chasm and it was at that moment that a balrog appeared and tried to catch up to us, but the old explorer dude stood on the bridge and shouted YOU SHALL NOT PASS and then totally made the bridge collapse and both fell into the chasm but his sacrifice made it possible to escape before anyone in our group got arrowed.
the bridge collapse wasn't very cool though because nobody got a picture of it first and now nobody ever will. such are the hazards of exploring in groups.

Exploring in a group can also be a great thing, when organized properly.
I've found myself to be with 12 other people in an abandoned grain silo that is patrolled by the Port Authority, without having any problems.
A couple weeks ago, we organized a meeting in an abandoned incinerator. Once again we were a large group (around 22 people), and despite the fact that the incinerator is on an active site, none of us got caught or had any problem.
Last summer, we had this huge party in an abandoned malt plant, this time with around 30 people suited up for the occasion (Tuxedos and dresses, please!)
I just wanted to show that exploring in large groups doesn't always lead to disasters 
But my ideal number of people to explore with would be 3, sometimes 4 (total, I mean)

I agree. I have been to MASSIVE meetups, where the fact there were so many of us worked for our advantage. It depends on the people, every day of the week. I don't have a set number of people that's is ideal, it's just the KIND of people you are with.

I totally agree on this one. The people on those pictures are all trusted explorers, we don't hang out with vandals or taggers.

I tend to only explore in smaller groups with only 1-3 other people. That's just more my social comfort zone. The only issues I've ever had are people being stupid or unreliable. Cancelling last minute, geo-locating locations on flickr, etc.. Then I just choose not to invite them anymore.
My group experiences have been mixed. It is kind of nice to have a bunch of people you know running around a location so you know if something should happen, there is back up. Safety in numbers and all that. That becomes less comforting and more annoying when I'm in an area I'm comfortable with and keep finding others in the background of all of my shots.

I don't usually explore with more then two or three other people. It's less of worries about being caught, and more that there's not a lot of people I trust enough to take them to my locations. I've a few favorite spots where I took someone along, only to come back a few days later to graffiti and broken booze bottles everywhere.
My funniest moment though... I took a few friends along for a night explore at an abandoned train yard with a reputation of being "haunted." Of course all the way over they kept bragging and posturing; we ain't afraid of no ghosts type shit. We're in the first building maybe five minutes and something gets knocked over on the floor above us. Probably the wind or a raccoon, no big deal. I turn around, though, and I'm alone. All three of the brave, manly explorers had run out of the building and locked themselves in my car. Thank the gods I had the keys or they probably would have left without me.
