I know, right?

"Are you happy now with all the choices you've made?" "Are there times in life when you know you should've stayed?"
"Will you compromise and then realize the price is too much to pay?" "Winners and losers... which one will you be today?"

From my experience, most of the homeless folks I have encountered while running around were friendly and looked just about as anxious on seeing me as I was on seeing them. I generally try to stop and wave or talk to them from a distance (I am a big guy), just to let them know I am there before I am up on top of them. Sometimes if I am walking and a person hasn't seen me yet, I will intentionally scuff my boot on the ground in order to make them aware of my presence. This is a holdover from my security guard days where I would intentionally rattle my key belt when entering a new floor on patrols. I think people are more likely to be dangerous if they are surprised by someone (especially in an already creepy place like an abandoned building or a tunnel).

As for the more dangerous, truly "shady" folks, I have no major pieces of advice on that. I have a code that I will never carry pepper spray or weapons with me on an exploration, primarily out of fear of additional charges by law enforcement if I am stopped. I am willing to fight if cornered, but I would prefer to talk or evade first if possible. I have never been threatened or attacked during an exploration yet, but when it has occurred in my personal life, I've usually been able to quickly walk away before it went too far. Most people seem much more willing to talk about what they're GOING to do to you than actually trying to do it. Of course, in the event of a real assault, I'm not above picking up a brick or a metal pipe to protect myself if I think I am about to be killed or seriously injured.

One other thing to think about (and I don't know the law very well, so I may be talking out my ass) is what could happen if you are attacked by a property owner or one of their security staff. If there is an absence of witnesses, the cops will probably believe their account of what happened over yours. Similarly, if you are forced to defend yourself against a property owner, I wouldn't be surprised if you get charged with burglary or something similar if you are on the property when the police show up.

For the short answer, I would do my best not to fight ANYONE unless you are cornered and afraid for your life. There are too many potential complications involved otherwise. I just accept the fact that this hobby (like life in general) is sometimes dangerous and there is nothing I can do that will completely mitigate that danger.

If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire... Tunnelrunner33!

Okay I know I am a rookie in EVERY way and shouldn't give much advice. BUT I wanna get more involved in my presence on the forums and I was aware of self defense long before UE. Basically ever since a knife was held at me, my current gf at the time and her little brother, ive never left the house without a weapon.

At the same time you don't see me hauling a revolver in my belt. I always have a knife like stated above, of course it is VITAL, that you get one that locks once in the open position. Make sure it is a sturdy reliable block that locks it open. (ive had one close on my finger once after it applying too much pressure cuz the little piece of metal meant to block it slipped, no stitches, it was a miracle)

I will carry anything from a simple metal pen sturdy enough to be a kubaton even. My UE backpack always has self defense items in it, or atleast the day or two before we head out they will be in there if not on our person. If we felt uncomfortable we knew we had them on us. Also when it was dark I flat out handed it to my girlfriend just in case something happened. But all we have is my knife, and a taser with built in flash light and of course a small key chain of pepper spray.

I expected much homeless squaters on our urbex so came prepared but ran into nothing.

I would say prepare like I did for the worst. Prolly better than being caught with a gun. A cop asked why I had a taser. He respected the fact that I would rather taze a man and let the cop deal with him rather than kill a man and then leave the cop to deal with me. Also because if i said i have a gun, cops go into self defense mode and become a bit stand offish of you until the reevaluate you and the situation. If I say officer I have a taser, hes just gunna ask why.

These are why I think its ideal. A knife is a tool that like object in the world, can be used as a weapon (IF NEEDED), pepper spray is sold at the register at autozone for cryin out loud and anyone over 18 can have a tazer and the zapping sound alone especially in an enclosed area INSTANTLY turns it into a deterrent. Even weak tasers make a menacing sound thatll scare just about anyone when its inside where the sharp sounds only echo and increase in sound. So anyone can get it, they aren't lethal, they are small, and by simply weilding it you can possibly prevent an altercation without having to use it. You also have levels of lethality to escalate to. Unarmed but won't keep his distance or is coming toward you? Show the spray, spray if neccessary and escalate if this does not stop the altercation to the taser. If the person if big, obvious aggressive, you think him having a weapon is possible or hes too close to warn with mace or mace didnt work. Flash the taser a good second or two and use if neccessary. If that does not work or you see a weapon. Display the knife and back yourself away from the area and situation until safe. I won't tell you when or when you are not authorized to use these things nor am I responsible for your local laws. Just stating this is my plan.

Hope my input is valued as good opinion, won't lie, 1 UE location, 2 trips is all I have under my belt. I am just giving my experience with amateur self defense/past experience and how I feel it would be useful for UE based on theory formed from those experiences.

This is all worst case scenario situations. Really the best deterrent is respect. I used to be homeless too. Treat them on these spots as you would in public except you should acknowledge their presence if you know they are there. Atleast a smile and nod or a wave shows them that their home is not going to be called in to authorities and you mean them no trouble. If they arent crazy, they are usually as reasonable as you are and will let you be. I mean other bums sleep near the areas and they dont bother each other too much obviously. You could prolly sleep there and they wouldn't care. But dont expect heavy pockets if you do lol.

***EDIT***
I just remembered and this should help tons of people because we all need flashlights right? You want dim ones for night time things when inside places with windows, bright for tunnels and everything else. Basically short range to medium. Anything with about 180 LUMENS is gunna hurt the eyes a bit to where you are temporarily blinded if directly flashed in the eyes. EVEN MORESO ON TWEEKERZ! These drug users are uppers (basically anything except weed is an upper for the uneducated) and the uppers are the most dangerous and unpredictable. Their eyes can NOT handle light, think about it, you all know about the eyes dialating right? Go to the eye doc, he dialates ur eyes, u need sunglasses for the next few hours.

So immagine their hell when ur in a darkish place and get violent. Shine their eyes as they come at you, move and their accuracy will greatly decrease.

I just went to Costco the other day. They have double flash lights. I believe one set was 300 lumens. Another was 500. I am getting these because they are not over sized. I do not remember the price of the 500 lumens but I am sure its at $50 or under. The 300 lumens were under $30. I'd look into these or any lights you find online that are made for such things. Bouncers love these lights, they use them to disorient drunks.

Down a long alleyway last night I saw a flashlight beam searching out a bit around a corner. I took mine out and flashed it around the path where the lightee could see.
Lights went out and I came around the corner to see a shanty and a hobo sentry.
"You can't be back here man."
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to disturb your setup."
"Nah, you didn't, but they let me stay here if I keep people out. If I hadn't stopped you, the next guy up would have."
We exchanged pleasantries and our names and talked about the eclipse coming in a couple hours.

I was out of good-town traffic, plenty of GR graffiti around, with camera equipment, so yes I was concealing for the just in case.

i was walking around a factory with my dad (He's 52 but lives like a 30 year old) and i went to different building then him when all the sudden i started seeing stuff that shouldnt be in an abandoned factory, i saw a scrappy looking Oxy ACC torch, a hacksaw, then as i rounded the corner something caught my eye and i backed away a biut - saw a guy with a rusted out pickup with no plates beating the crap out of some copper pipes with a hammer. So i got out of there before he saw me.

Another time i was at Kinichee mine (Now demoed) and i was wandering under a silo, when i heard a rustling, and so i went back up to ground level, and saw two guys on ATVs, i introduced myself, and they went on there way. I havent had a bad experience, but i like to avoid physical conflict - but like someone else said most people talk about fighting you but in reality they wont.
