I've seen a couple of these before, but they're not supposed to be aircooled VW powered- should be a 3 cyl 2 stroke water cooled. Either way, it's cool.

The crazy German auto collector I met here in Portland who has quite a collection told me the DKW Munga (name of this puppy) was hated by the West German Border Police because while it was quite capable for driving along the fence, its engine was awful to maintain so thats why they sold them second hand to various other countries; the aircooled VW engine was selected because apparently its easy to bolt up.

Found a junkyard a couple weeks back that is its own little time capsule. Today's trip yielded a 2nd-gen Dodge Daytona, an Isuzu Stylus, a Datsun B210, a Ford Fairmont/LTD, a Mazda 929, an AMC Gremlin, a Chevy Monza, quite a few first-gen Ford Escorts, and quite a few Beetles.
And that's excluding the stuff I found on the first visit.

Reminds me of a junkyard I've been to in Toledo area. The back of the yard is partially in the woods and has lots of oddballs from the 50s-80s. I have pics somewhere. Last time I was in that area the yard had closed down. Likely due in part to the fact that they would send recent arrivals to the crushers and leave the old stock most of which has been stripped of any useful parts years ago.

If I were to return and potentially scavenge parts from the Beetles, what should I be on the lookout for? They look to be pretty far gone (didn't get an up-close look) but I'm sure there are some salvageable bits.

And yes, definitely some autogasm-worthy material in there. Haven't actually been through the whole place yet.

Honestly, they're late model ones, so everything is still pretty much readily available for them.

Oddly enough... when I said there was some gold in there, I actually didn't mean the Beetles. There are some cars in there I haven't seen in any form in at least 10 years. Super cool find. I checked out a scrapyard 2 winters ago that was similar... basically just filled with cars that the world forgot about (with more rust), but apparently it's entirely gone now.
