Posted by CatAndTie Another question regarding beards. Is it better to wear a mask with a beard even though that means it won't be completely air tight or better to go without? I think I remember reading somewhere that if you have a mask that is not completely air tight it could actually be worse than no mask, but that didn't fully make sense to me. Can you shed any light on that?

Vaseline. Grease that beard up to get a seal. Not pretty but it works on shorter beards. If it doesn't you'll be greased and contaminated. Be sure to post a pic of that As for which is worse, in heavily contaminated air even 1% bypassing the filters is a lot of shit to be eating. I recommend avoiding sites that have large quantities of airborne asbestos or toxins. Most sites don't and if they do they exceed the experience level and equipment most explorers have to do safely.

This may have been covered, but how often do you need to replace the filters?

You replace particulate filters when breathing resistance through the respirator increases; so when it gets harder to breathe through the respirator it's time to replace the filters. Vapor respirators I believe get replaced when it gets easier to breathe due to vapors deteriorating the filter, but I need to double check on that so don't quote me on that.

Vapor are not to be reused once unsealed.

Awesome, so would you use these pink cartridges for blocking out dust, mold, asbestos, et cetera?

The P100 purple filters are your best bet unless you want to drag a full face SCBA helmet around with you. A bit impractical, no? I'll stick with a dual filter half mask.

I believe some professionals actually use the pink 2091/2097 filters for working with asbestos, but I personally use the 7093 filters. They are P100 rated HEPA filters and you can't go wrong with a P100 rating in regard to asbestos. It will also filter out mold and lead. EDIT: Additional information.

Great info! I use a half mask and haven't encountered anything(as of yet) That required more protection than that.

Try to get the P100 WITHOUT the odor filtration. It soaks up the smell from where ever you're keeping it stored and makes the air you inhale smelly next time you use it.

I've got a mask question: I use a P100 disposable mask and add mold goggles if I think I need them. I'm traveling by plane and will hit some explores that I expect will require the mask and maybe the goggles. Should I fly with them in my carry on (I don't need to take much) or should I buy new ones there and abandon them at the hotel when I depart? Basically, how suspicious will traveling with them look? I tend to get pulled for full security checks on the regular anyway so I don't want to bring extra attention to myself in the queue.

Say you need it to help a family member/friend do some remodeling. A P100 respirator will definitely raise eyebrows and almost certainly get you pulled. Hell, I got my bag emptied once because my copy of War and Peace showed up large and rectangular on the X-ray. Have an excuse on hand, and don't take it in your carry-on luggage. They'll want to know why you need a "gas mask" on an airplane, so it's better to leave it in in the cargo hold. Have a story and don't appear nervous, you'll be fine.

Thanks! I'll see which costs more - a new mask on arrival or checking luggage on not united flights

You need a bog standard 40mm nato filter for it. This is really overkill. However you really dont want to wear on of those things for urbex. They are extremely hot and restrict your movement field of view and will generally make you pretty miserable. Just pick up a pp100 respirator, You can get them at most hardware stores.

even picking up a scott O-vista is pretty cheap... I have three of them from where I work (one is a firefighting mask). The downside is finding the right filters for them. BUT, they do work with an SCBA.

How did you spend 700+ on a 80-100$ mask
|

A full on gas mask is way overkill for urban exploring. It looks cool..but a P100 respirator will work just fine and will be a LOT more comfortable.

We arent talking about NBC protection here. We are talking about civilian systems and the ratings that are available to the average person. There are no currently available systems that are approved with for persons with beards or facial hair. If we were a military forum then your statement would be true, but the purpose of this post and the reason it was pinned, is because it is tailored to the average urban explorer looking to properly protect themselves.

I honestly don't think you could have answered that better, Send4Help; I've been doing this for years, and only recently realized the harm I have been doing to myself withOUT wearing a mask at all until a few months ago. This isn't the place to measure dicks with "certifications." This is a place to be helpful, plain and simple. I started wearing a half-face mask after noticing that the smaller type just didn't cut it. Frankly, if I can still SMELL the air of the place, it probably shouldn't be in my lungs. After reading your information, and highly logical responses, I'm grateful. With professional photography, I'm in there for hours on end (usually around 8-10 hours), this is NEEDED INFORMATION without whipping a status/certification around. Thank you.

Could anyone give me a good half-mask respirator recommendation (brand & model)?
