I'm guessing that you never bothered reading my earlier comments where I said everything that you are now saying, but much more succinctly and eloquently.

I read it, and expanded on it. I think some people want to watch, no matter how sadistic it may seem, others struggle with their survival since they are not as "prepared" as themselves. Though honestly very few people are really as prepared as they think they are.

I dunno, the popularity of survival shows and survivalist shows has been on the rise. The popularity of Zombies has been going up. I have to wonder if it isn't connected, some deep down urge to NOT have to go to work today, or ever again. To survive off the land. To make the rules as you go along. To have a greater purpose in life than filing and faxing.

I don't think you have much of an argument there.

If there was an increase of people going Alexander Supertramp and effectively erasing themselves from society, then that might be a good example. But, in my opinion, the popularity of survivalist shows relies on the same curiosity as, say, putting a hamster in a ball and seeing what it does.

Simply put, people really aren't willing to work for freedom on the whole. They are more than willing to verbalize about their lack of freedom, though.

But when does the population hit a tipping point to go from talk to action? Or do they ever? I think they are waiting. Waiting for the excuse. Things work as is for now, but if things quit working as well as is, and I mean a lot worse than it is now, then you may see it. You may see vast quantities of people saying, nope. No more.

I take it you haven't looked back at history? Even if it's an uprising against the government, same theory. Eventually being comfy doesn't do it anymore. Freedom is much more cherished. Well by those who have a full sack anyway.

I've said for a long time that the only solution for today's political problems is blood, but I'm beginning to think that the only change that will ever happen is that America will simply be dominated and become a vassal of someone else.

Maybe then, if our new rulers can't do as good of a job providing Snuggies, ice cream, and crappy TV, something interesting might happen.

So has the popularity of shows like Jersey Shore and Honey Boo-Boo. We like these shows because it proves that there are people more pathetic than us. But any apocalyptic scenario will be more like The Road and less like Dawn of the Dead.

But, when push comes to shove, the vast majority of people would choose convenience over freedom. They might try not to think about it, but its easier not to think about it while watching TV on a comfy couch, wrapped in a Snuggy and eating ice cream.

Convenience or security?

I noticed that no one addressed this yet...

A population never does that. As long as people think their own thoughts, that will never happen.

Individuals, however, do experience some sort of tipping point. But, in my opinion, it isn't necessarily caused by any sort of media.

For instance, let's say you see a commercial for a Dorito taco. The commercial does its best to convince you, in 30 seconds, that you will be satisfied and happy once you eat a Dorito taco. But that's why commercials try so hard to have staying power: they only have 30 seconds to hammer a message as far into your brain as possible.

Now we'll assume that the idea of getting a Dorito taco is embedded in your brain, and you finally decide to get into your car, drive to a restaurant, and get a Dorito taco. It isn't necessarily repeated exposure to a form of media or a theme in culture that has spurred you to do this.

After all, how many times have you seen a commercial repeated five or six times in a short timespan, and then actually gone out and made use of the product or service?

TL;DR: Media puts ideas into people's heads, but those people form their own tipping point.

Right, but then after many individuals tip, the population reaches a tipping point, and the societal view changes.

The percentage of individuals who are becoming survivalists (this is what the thread's about now, apparently) after viewing TV shows, movies, or other visual media is so low that it's pretty much irrelevant.

As has been stated previously in this thread, it's impractical or inconvenient - take your pick - for 99% of the population.

Or people don't think it's necessary.
