2013 plans??
< on 1/9/2013 7:17 PM >

Now that 2013 is here, I am wondering if anyone is planning any trips yet. I am in the preliminary stages of planning my annual May solo canoe trip and will also be planning a trip in the late summer or early fall to take my young one on his first camping trip.

My solo trip will be either a 3 or 4 nighter to the west side of Algonquin Park and the trip with my wife and son will be to Algonuin, it's where I got my start and I'd like it to be where he gets his.

Sounds awesome! Despite trying to keep from losing our house last summer, I bought a canoe at a yard sale (it was just too good a deal to pass up). I mean, we were watching pennies so much I couldn't even buy paddles for it.

But anyway, I've been looking around here for places to do a canoe camping trip. Ohio's parks with lakes are really geared toward fishing, so the big lakes are all fairly easy access and not particularly wild, but I managed to find a few places that look like they might work for a stealth trip. I just need to get some paddles and a raft for gear, since the capacity of my canoe isn't quite enough for two people (me being rather portly) plus gear & dog(s).

Also planning to do my Moonville Rail-trail trip sometime this year. (Hiking + abandonments!)

Other than that, I don't have anything specifically planned, except that more hiking & other outdoor stuff must be done to make use of the SteriPen my son got me for Christmas.

I am hoping to make a trip to Wyoming and to put some time onto the North Country Trail this spring/summer.

I still need to buy a canoe but I'm in the same boat! Once my wife and I buy a place I'll buy a used one, most likely from one of the outfitters since they're pretty cheap and in reasonable condition.

I had to replace the seats on mine, too. They were plywood covered with foam & vinyl, and the plywood was rotting and the screws were pulling out, so I replaced them with pressure-treated wood. Luckily, I had scrap pieces laying around that I could use, so I just had to buy the hardware. I got stainless steel, which was pricey compared to the usual stuff, but still only about $6.

I've thought about buying a kayak or canoe, but I have sooo many other activities that I just don't have time for another one. If I had not gotten into mine exploring I may have done the boating thing. The other down side is living in the desert limits the amount of paddling available. We have Lake Mead and the Colorado, but not the beautiful remote streams and rivers further north.

My roommate and I are talking about going in together to buy a travel trailer. We have camped out of her pop-up and my teardrop, but am considering selling my tiny trailer to upgrade to a slightly larger stand-up trailer.

I would like to get out and do some more mine exploring this year. Due to work and other commitments, I've slowed down a bit on it recently.

Cheers in the new year!

What is this "hammock" thing you are talking about and what the heck would you use it for?? We don't have hammocks around here for some reason....

Actually did a fair bit of camping in the back of my Trooper before I sold it. My tent has gotten quite a bit of use as well. My little trailer is like a hard sided tent. It's a queen size mattress inside of a box, with a galley in back so I can cook.

Tree? Are you speaking in French?

That is one of the serious down sides to living in the high desert. There are thousands of square miles with no naturally occurring trees. Once we head up into the mountains there are plenty of trees.

There is an interesting hammock thread on an outdoor forum that I frequent. You might be interested in reading it: http://www.expedit...nd-Hammock-Camping It is a neat forum, although sometimes a little highbrow. Lot's of good information though.

Enjoy!

I was told by my boss that I HAD to go to a conference this year, so I picked on in Anaheim in October, and he's cool with my going a couple days early, so PCT, here I come!

Because of the logistics involved, I'm probably only going to do an overnighter, and probably just have a can of something for dinner and a Clif Bar for breakfast. But I wonder, when camping in the desert, does one really need a tent? Rain I think would be pretty unlikely, but I'm worried about one of the locals crawling into my sleeping bag for a warm-up. Thoughts?
