Central air questions

So here's the deal: our central air has worked for years, and I'm getting a little tired of having our living room hit 90 degrees in the evening (it's 89 in here as I type. Why the hell aren't I on the patio?!?!)

I've had two people tell me it needs to be re-wired. What I think happened is while my house was abandoned, the dude cutting the grass cut the wire going to the AC unit outside. I ran a new wire (as well as I could; it's wire spaghetti in the attic) but still nothing. The unit works, has freon, etc.

I was looking at the wiring diagram for the furnace, and it has a lead going from the thermo to something called the "optional condenser unit" and then to ground on the furnace. Is the optional condenser unit the AC unit outside?

I posted this same question on Appliance Repair Forums and got no reply. If someone here could help me it would make UER the awesomest site ever!

Splume I'll try and give a better answer when not on the phone but quick question, do you have a multi meter and are you good with electricity?
