Thanks! I'm happy with the way the pics turned out. I'd really like to get my own good clear shot of the CCTV skeleton painted on the outside. I'll need a different camera, or to come back during the daylight to see it well enough. I also want to get a shot of the outside of the place. Once I go back to get all the pics I want, I'll likely not ever go back except to show someone else, so I want to make sure I get enough to remember the whole thing.

Danger nice to meet you, though I say the "last night" as you imply is a fabrication, since all my explorations happen in the timeless land.

Digression over.

The whole window thing sucked, but life goes on and it could have been a lot worse! I feel bad for poor Ms. Bonnie having to sit on newspaper so the glass wouldn't cut her....

Since Bonnie and I first went to this place some time back, I've been interested in the history of this place. With out being too specific, the first silo (and I believe crane as well) were built as a post WWII modernization effort (good use of tax payer dollars I'm sure), the second silo was added about a decade later. The entire thing was disused after the grain shortages in the UK in the 1970's. Interestingly, there was a proposal to reuse this site as a fly ash offload terminal, but was rejected due to health concerns. Currently the site is up for receiving an art treatment as part of beautification efforts, and therefore the access is likely to change, but the site is likely to stay for the next decade...

I'm still very much editing my photos so I'm likely to do a second round of photos, but here's my take on this place....

Cross Over The Downers

Scale 1

Don't Piss Off The TV

Silo 505

Blue Smile

Face Belt

Silo 302

Silo Extinguisher

Below the Sky Walk Of DOOOM!

2010 distribution

Top of The Leg

Legs In The Night!

Under the Bridgewalk...

1000 LBS

(The Light Streams) Through the Legs

Dueling Silos

Ohh and a few for haven't seen them, the new super hero of abandonment the Pig Tailed Protector:

Like all superheros, the story of the pigtailed protector started in a place where no one was suposed to be, walking in an abandoned building.
SFX: Echoing Camera Clicking Overlapped with Echoing Footsteps

Male (with long hair): Hold on I need to put my hair in a pony tail so my hair stops flopping in pigeon crap

SFX: Stops

Male : (to female) I have a pack of hair ties if you want one.

Female : Naw I'm good

Male starts to tie back hair

Female : OMG! We should give you pigtails! It'll be super fun!

Male : Ummmmm, Okay....

SFX: Blowing horns

Narrator and the Pigtailed Protector was born!

Thanks as always for looking!

hey guys, so I'm wondering if any of you would be willing to bring my wife and I to this location while were vacationing in cali. Many of the best locations in the twin cities are silos so they hold a special place in my heart

Great photos insainly sound! Thanks for the history. Some of that info I'd also found online. I'm not sure if anyone else saw it but I photographed certificate/license to operate a piece of equipment. The document was dated 1982 so there was some activity in there until at least the early 80s.

Rescueme and Danger, that's kinda what I was going for at the end there, but earlier I was definitely shooting my colorful but desolate style. Kinda post apocalyptic desolation meets gay 70's disco, oddly I wouldn't be surprised if that's how some explorers would describe exploring with me as....

Thanks, I used to use gels, but recently made the switch to a Tri-Color LED. It gives a greater pop but at a cost, it seems to over expose the photos easier, but that may be a transitional problem. Still working out the timings...

I've explored other abandoned buildings that had current permits for the air compressors, though hadn't been used in year. One comes to mind owned by the same people not a stones throw away, that had been totally disused in 1997 (as evidenced by other onsite documentation), but had CURRENT (as of posting date) air compressor permits. I think the idea is to make the site available to reuse if the need arises, and a site like this (sadly) has limited continued usefulness.

Big warning to anyone heading out. I went for a visit today at around 7PM and whoever is living inside the buildings began throwing rocks and bottles from the top floor as I approached the docks. Whoever is doing this is not joking, several came very close to hitting me. Dangerous situation.

multiple UER's have confirmed that there are at least 2 individuals living in the silos. we even heard one of the crazies screaming his head off while we were upstairs the last time I was there. and Insainly had his car broken into. this place is a little hot right now, it also might be a good time to make this thread private. I'm glad you made it out okay soltrain, but if you or anyone else is going to go back i would say go during the day not at night.

It was actually quite bright when I went to visit at 7PM, I think that's what contributed to his/her good aim I knew there might be crazy folk inside, didn't know they were that crazy. Needless to say, be very careful.

New fence and other defenses have been installed, be very careful. With so much redevelopment going on in the area It's my opinion that this and other places like it won't be here for many more years.

Opinions are sometimes wrong. This would only temporarily save the buildings for the next 5 years.
My vote goes to CCTV

Placeholder text. Being that it is 4AM, I will write a report later Monday.

Yes, we saw some concerning things.

Edit, begin short trip report:

Seedy and I went out to SWAV on a Sunday afternoon, about 5 months since my first visit. I missed a good deal of the second building, so checking that out was a goal. Also, I had acquired an UWA lens between then and now, and if there was any place that called for it, this would be it. So off we went.

As rescueme1060 noted, there is indeed new fencing. However, access remains more-or-less unchanged. The new fencing seems to be more focused toward denying access to the lots being used by businesses to store raw materials.

3.

As we made our way up the grate stairs of the northern tower, this came into view. I recognized it at a distance and blurted, "OMFG..."

I estimate the weight to be suspended around 40-to-50 feet off the deck. It does not have a clear shot to the bottom, and will likely bounce off an edge to effect a completely unpredictable trajectory if-and-when it falls. We agreed that we do not want to be anywhere near this building when that happens.

4.

As Seedy noted, it was elaborately and haphazardly rigged, being suspended off an industrial pulley anchored off the edge of the grate stairs. Surely the stairs were not designed for a load like this, much less on its edge.

We figured that if the weight dropped, it would necessarily take much of the stairs with it. And it will eventually drop, given that the laid rope will decay.

After a bit of trepidation, I limbo'ed under the rope tensioned across our path and contorted around the metal frame you see here.

5.

The rope was tensioned around the ajar door, and movement of the door would introduce slack into the system to unknown effect. Not knowing what I would find, I thrust my camera-on-tripod into the opening to see what the exact circumstance was.

We found the anchors were far more sketchy than we had imagined, involving a couple of handrails and two more of the 1000lb weights, held in their place only with friction.

This is one of these.

6.

You can see the other one in this shot.

I don't know what the intent (if any) of this was, but it seems to have taken considerable effort and will surely effect significant destruction when it goes. That's simply fucked-up. It is possible that this can be defused with enough manpower and judicious use of rope and block-and-tackle rigging, but we were not equipped for that.

After a short consideration, we decided to continue with our exploration.

Someone elaborately rigged up one of those weights and suspended it in the chute with the "people transporter" belt. it was pretty weird. I definitely don't want to be around when that rope lets go.
