Relates to: Alarm, Intrusion detection.

Term used mainly within the security industry to describe what occurs after an Alarm system has discovered the presence of an intruder; either through its own sensors or through the intervention of a witness to the fact (i.e. pushing a panic button or similar.)
During the alarm condition, the system will bring the presence of the intruder to the attention of the relevant people, and pretty much everyone else in the area, usually by sounding a local siren and/or notifying a remote monitoring centre.
The siren is also intended as a deterrent, to "panic" the intruder into leaving the site as soon as possible.

An alarm condition will also occur if the system detects any attempts to tamper with its workings.

The term "trouble" is a synonym. The alarm system would switch from "Normal" to "Trouble" if there is a status change, such as a sensor being tripped or activated.
