ok, so i pass by the gun shop alot. well i had some time to waste so i stop in. i look around and keep to myself. then i see an ar-15 with a sign above it. "LOOK! We have an ar-15 (lists the specs.) IN LEFT HAND for all you SOUTHPAWS! Just ask to see it. well the ar under the sign is r/h as
%99.9999999999999 of all the rifles/carbines/shotguns, handguns, pistols, and everything else in the world (less cars in england). so i do what the sign says and ask to see it. the reply from the sale guy was less than helpful. "well we dont have one that i can show you"- he says. "but, look at a r/h ar in a mirror, thats what it looks like." yeah, gottcha' dick head. "but, we can order you one, it can be here as soon as late next week." "well, if i wanted one that bad, i would call my buddys over at spikes tactical, and i could have one in a few hours." i reply- he did not think that was funny. i turn and look at some other stuff they have as im leaving. then he says something i cant really hear (see my other rant), and i reply "maybe you should take the sign down then huh?"

so till i can get my hands on one to test drive, i guess all i can do is look at some gun porn like this:

the lefty lament

are you left eye dominant?

maybe because I was started out very young shooting right handed by my father I can use either eye, shoot with both open one or the other closed etc

if I dont stop and think about it too long I have become right eye dominant (shooting for almost 50 yrs)

be that as it may I still cannot throw a baseball right handed I used to bat left or right equally and if I tried to write right handed it would be almost illegible

maybe someday they will build a left hand Remington 1187 because I want to weld one of these together with a right handed one!

ok, so the first time i tried to reply was a huge fail. here is the short version.

i was born and raised in canada. i was forced to be right handed. i can do some this equally well with both. few things better southpaw, most things are done better r/h.

when i got my own rifle, thats when i figured out that i was much better of a shot as a southpaw.

and yes i am VERY LEFT EYE DOM!

If I may ask, what exactly is the difference between lefty and righty firearms?

there are very very few left hand rifles. the ones i have seen have all been bolt guns. if you look at a rifle. they are made so that the controls are located on the side where the shooter can operate them with the right hand. and it ejects away from the shooter to the right. to a southpaw or left hand like me, these do not work. as the controls are operated by reaching over the firearm to operate say the bolt, or removing the for are hand or support hand to operate them. AND it ejects spent casing across my face not AWAY from my face. there are a few older .22's that ejected down but they are rare..
any other questions?

I have a solution to your problem.

Enter the FN PS90.

Chambered in the 5.7x28mm cartridge, the PS90 utilizes blowback operation and fires from a closed bolt for greater accuracy and reliability. The PS90’s civilian legal 16.04" cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC barrel is equipped with an integrated muzzle brake to reduce recoil. Dual magazine latches, cocking handles and an innovative olive drab synthetic thumbhole stock with a molded-in sling attachment point help make the PS90 fully ambidextrous. Models with 10- or 30-round polymer detachable magazines are available.

I started out righty, but due to gradual vision loss in my right eye I've been forced to switch to left-eye-dominant. Which works fine for shooting handguns, as I can easily adjust for that, but with rifles/shotguns... it means I have to start learning to shoot with a lefty-hold. And it introduces all the problems that go with that. Gah.

FN makes many fine firearms, the ps90 is well built and is a very compact unit. im sure it will follow into the area that the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steyr_AUG has started.

the problem i see with the PS90 is the round. its a wildcat, much like the .17 cal rimfires or the .222swift. it really has no purpose. the 5.7x28, is a pistol round made for the FN57, a very fast, flat running round that "goes away" once it hits "something" or falls like a brick after it effective range- maybe the first "safe round" ever made. but, having a side arm and rife that fire the same ammo is a wise choice...i think- but i would use a bigger round. enter the plr-16, (.223/5.56mm) and there we are again- same type of issue, too much round for a hand gun, not enough for a rifle. slower still is the 1911 / tommy gun (both .45acp)- you just cant win here.

as for the rifle itself, i have held more than one. i shot one at the last "event" at the club where i shoot. but the $2800-3000 price tag and cost/supply of ammo told me it was more like a novelty.
im not in the market for a l/h or ambi rifle. but its not that hard with todays cnc machines to make an ar in l/h. i would buy one if the $ were the same as a standard (sub $700 built).

Yeah you can get a L/H machined upper reciever for a couple hundred bucks and swap out the corresponding parts on an AR.

They even make a conversion so you can use P90 mags on an AR15 platform, and the empties eject down the AR's old mag well.

I wouldn't mind seeing a variant of the PS90 built to a different caliber spec. They have them for .22 conversions now. *retches*

I'm not sure where your train of thought was
My AR15 lower is still searching for the right upper to mate it with. Haven't decided yet. (oh yeah, and I'm broke) lol.

I shoot lefty, I have never had a problem with any weapon.

I can work my bolts pretty damn fast and switch my M4 from safe to fire as quick as the next guy. Really, from a military stand point you want left handed shooters so they can work with cover that would be awkward for right handed guys.

But I have my AR, never had problems shooting it being a lefty, and none of the other lefties I know have any problems either. With the shell deflector nothing should ever hit you in the face, the charging handle is ambidextrous, the mag release and safety can be worked easy if your a lefty, especially when you are used to it.

Well there you have it.

Racking the bolt on a Rem700 is still awkward though, when you hold the righty version in lefty mode. Gotta switch up your hands, otherwise you're left holding the length of the rifle from the trigger area, and the bolt handle comes back under your chin.

I was considering putting a scope mount with a 45deg left-side canted angle on it, I even found some mounts which are set up that way. But then you'd be working off X/Y/Z axis', instead of the typical X/Y.
I'd still like to check it out and see how viable it is sometime.

With my bolts I just reach over the receiver with my left hand. I imagine that could be a problem if you have a scope but idk, I just have iron sights.

dont do that. i had an off-set scope mount on my mini, hated it. poi was was off at anything but were it was sighted at. (give or take 25 yards- it was a mini)

Eh, figured as much. Good to know though.

And yeah Soldat, my Rem700 is chambered in 300winmag and it's scoped. Reaching over a scope is just fail in motion.

I suppose you could use iron sights on one... Mine's set at 600yrd though, I wouldn't even be able to see the target at that distance. Unless maybe it was human-sized

Brass flying out bothers me, and I`m not even a lefty. FYI, for you left handed shotgunners, the old Ithaca Model 37 was a downwards eject. Still lots of nice ones out there.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

All M4s are left handed M4s.

Here is a good in depth article on left handed shooting if anybody cares.

Shot a friends lever-action .30-30 today. Still not used to my LEFT shoulder hurting. Did fairly well with it though.

Also, what the hell kind of manufacturer makes shoot-n-see dye targets that are $8 for a pack, and doesn't make them with PEEL AND STICK BACKING???
