slowing down a 50 cal

my task is to effectively slow down or stop a 50 cal 15 meters after it is fired.
i have to keep it from ricocheting off the 375lbs AR500 "just in case, oh shit" backstop. i have only 5 ft to do this and i cant make a huge mess or be spilling a ton of water all over the place.

i have come to the conclusion that water would work the best but seeing as this is indoors with no drain I'd rather not.

were only going to be popping off ten or so rounds that need to be slowed, after that it will be going up against customers armor.

i'm thinking of welding up 1/2 inch or inch plate evenly spaced like this
1/2"plate, 1/2"gap,1/2"plate, 1/2"gap,1/2"plate.

I would say sandbags stacked in front of a sheet of steel. Whats the 50 cal coming out of though?

it's an interchangeable barrel fired by a solenoid. you can swap out any caliber barrel.

this is the 5m range we will be firing the 50 cal on the 15m, but it's the same setup.

Alot of indoor ranges slow down the rounds with a sheet of mineral oil. Just an idea, it wouldnt be to bad to make a catch pan to repump the oil back to where your pouring it from.

What did you go with?

Why not a barrel of ballistic gelatin?
BG will slow down just about anything.
May take 2 weeks to dry though ...

I dont think anything is gonna stray with a couple of sandbags laid in front of a sheet of steel. Steel will stop the projectile after going through the sandbags, and the sandbags will keep the projectile from straying.

A .50 will punch through steel.
A .50 will punch through bricks.
How much and what kind of steel are we talking here?

Im talking about a common sense setup, like 2 sandbags thick and a sheet of steel like whats used to cover roadwork.

The .50 will penetrate:
.875" of hardened armor plate steel @ ~100m.
.75" at 500m.
So ~1" of soft GP steel ... .50 is going to punch right through that.
AR500, not so much - but I would worry, a lot, about ricochet.
.50 has a LOT of energy.

Did you do the test yet?
