A scare at the old candy factory
entry by ThePhonedude
2/24/2011 12:28 AM

First, I'm going to start with a little history of my UE adventures.
I started getting into UE when my Dad and I would explore old houses and factories around town.
If they weren't boarded/ locked up, or otherwise structurally unstable, we would check it out.

In this over protective, lawsuit happy age, you might think taking a 10 year old kid into old buildings is incredibly stupid, yes there is always some danger, but my Dad always knew how to go about it safely, and taught me good common sense, for instance, how to see if a floor is safe to walk on, watching out for squatters/ crazies, and avoiding tripwires! And yet, here I am almost 26, and still alive and well!

I am going to get to the point of this entry, and that's the old candy factory.
Dad discovered an easy entrance into a long abandoned 3 story factory, and thought we could check it out. we entered through a basement window in an unused alley and started our exploration.
There were car parts, boxes of random stuff, a room full of refrigeration/ AC controls, and plastic bunny heads. Yes, plastic bunny heads! These were part of those clear plastic tubes for Easter candy. The bunny's head would have been the lid for the tube.

Long story short, we didn't get it all explored that day, so we saved the rest for next weekend. So next weekend finds us back in the old factory, on the second floor, starting up to the third.
My Dad was in the lead, watching for dangers and such, and I was close behind. As we reached the top of the stairs, we both heard a growling snarling sound, at which point Dad said "Shit that sounds like dogs"!
We hurried down the stairs, me in front this time, we weren't running, but we weren't casually walking away either. when we reached the entry point, we quickly exited and waited to see if the "dogs" had followed us. Apparently not, so we both breathed easier.

So Dad said he would go back by himself and see if the "dogs" were still there.
The following weekend, I was back at Dad's and dying to know what he found.
He said "you'll never believe what it was -PIGEONS!" sure enough we returned, and heard the growling once again, and it was indeed the pigeons on the upper floor! I've heard pigeons "coo" and make other strange noises, but haven't heard "growling" pigeons since!

Sadly, the factory was demolished 10 or 11 years ago, but we made around 5 trips there, and saw some cool stuff like boxes of unused labels for candy packages, more car parts, (I think it was a garage after the candy factory), and of course "guard pigeons"!
