New Helmet-Mounted Mining Setup

Alright, so I mounted a quick disconnect plate for my GoPro helcam, and strapped on my new Fenix HP10 and my side-slung throw beam. I can deal with the weight. If anything I can take off the side-slung light and it'll be very well balanced.

I've tested it in darkness and in bright sun, the camera adjusts very well to the different lighting levels. Then I tested it in a fully dark walk-in closet; with both the diffuser open and closed. The cam doesn't pick up any glare from the light, even on its highest setting, and even with or without the diffuser closed.

And, when the light is helmet mounted, even with the diffuser on it doesn't throw glare into my eyes like it will when it's purely head mounted without the helmet.

I'm really happy with this system. I'll be testing it out this coming week on our mining trip; "Return to Tecopa".

Nice, that HP10 is a pretty nice headlamp. I have to admit it was a hard decision between that and the Petzl. I think my ideal light would combine the Fenix's capacity for maximum output, heatsinking and overall build quality with the Petzl's programmability and wide/throw mechanism.

Oh yeah, and keep the Fenix-like price tag.

I keep meaning to get one or two of those fold-out diffusers - how effective are they?

Nice!

I really like that side slung light you have on there. I've been trying to figure out a way to do the same thing with my light and helmet...as it'd be a little more powerful than my current headlamp.

Meta: about the diffuser.

IT SUCKS LARGE DONKEY PENORZ. (sorry I had to get that out)

Seriously, without any effort at all they could've desined the diffuser so much better. Since the whole things is translucent, it glares into your eyes, even when helmet mounted. (I used to think it didn't, in my original post, but after using it for more than 30 hrs of use...it does.)

So I took electrical tape and wound around it. It helps alot, but the edge of the pieces which hinges back and forth still gives the effect to a lesser degree. I'm about to dig out my modeling paint and paint the edge of it black.

Also, after extensive use, the hinge pieces doesn't hold the flippy cover shut all the way anymore. So there's a little slit opening where it doesn't quite shut all the way.

I'm 20000% happy with the light itself.

The diffuser, on the other hand, makes me want to find the fucker that designed it and murder him in a very painful way.

I hate to say it, but that's a big part of why I didn't buy this light. I will probably 100% definitely buy whatever future headlamp they make if it's an HP10 with a good flip up diffuser built in.

Black sharpie around the edge. Or black paint.

I used electrical tape around the clear part, wrapped around, and black sharpie on the leading edge of the plastic flippy piece.

It actually worked really well. It didn't bother me at all this time out.

*shrugs* Its a pain to have to mess with, but it wouldn't be the first thing I've had to modify for better use.

Hell, I even cut out a piece of waxed paper to make a poor-mans diffuser for my Solarforce L2, and it worked really great!!!

Everyone on this last trip was complimenting the HP10. They couldn't believe how small and light it was, and how much light it put out.
