Leaving things behind?
< on 7/2/2010 2:26 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I know we're not supposed to take anything with us except for pictures as far as "the rules" go.
But has anyone thought about leaving things behind? (NOT trash or vandalism) Like a "calling card"?

Personally I was thinking about making up some UE stickers, and leaving one or two in random places at sites I explore. Kind of like an easter egg, maybe put our usernames on them? That way when we visit the same sites we'll know who's been there. <3

This is also the place to discuss notes you've left for people or notes you've seen. Has anyone replied to them? Ever had or seen a conversation on the wall between two explorers?

Any thoughts, ideas, already dones, comments, flames, etc?

Also ITT, anyone heard of or had any experience with Geocaching? I think that would be a fun thing to get together with forum members in our regional groups!

Sometimes when your in the business of trespassing, leaving behind a calling card to a website is not the best idea.

There are times though, I think it would be fun provided there is not an angry owner to contend with. Many members already leave their names on chaulk boards in schools, factories, etc.

Tried Geocaching once or twice, found an old wet box with some trinkets buried below a water-filled hole and gave up after that. If you have children it can be a fun little treasure hunt.

Plenty of people have done things like that (leaving behind stickers or writing)

Most of the more whored-out locations I've been to have a list somewhere of the UER members who have been there.

Geocaching isn't exactly my thing, but I've stumbled upon a few caches while exploring.

any chalk board in a frequented location will be covered in names, most of which you'll recognize from these boards.

I wouldn't put up the web address to this forum anywhere. Already gets a lot of visits from people of authority, no need to leave them a trail of crumbs leading right here.

Yeah yeah I'm not trying to put UER on blast, I'm just saying, a sticker of some sort, representing us or the hobby itself. Not necessarily one that points to this website.

I'm really interested in Street Art itself, and multiple things having to do with graffiti. I know everyone on this board is bred to hate graffiti, but I respect it. I don't like it on historic sites, or private property, but I also think there is a big difference between art and tagging. And Street Art in the streets and on walls in the city is much different than vandalizing an abandoned site just for the sake of vandalizing it. Plus, not much point in doing graffiti in abandonments; who's gonna see it? However, my "street art" and "graffiti" hobby is separate from my exploration hobby. Also, in my original post you'll note;
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"
"(NOT trash or vandalism)"

And yes, that list is a list of places that I've had ARTWORK featured, along with several galleries across the states. (However BombingScience is full of children, toys, and etards who probably shouldn't be allowed to use a computer, I like BombingScience just for the music section.) I've also had work featured on picturesofwalls.com

Also, review the first sentence of the facebook bio.

Well, I did leave a bottle of water behind by accident last time, and my fellow explorer never let that one go once we got thirsty... oh, um, you said no trash.

Underground expo recordings, sure; topsides, not so much. There's enough crap left behind in most abandonments that there's no need to add to it. I can certainly see the novelty in adding ones' name to a blackboard though.

It's hard not to develop an 'us versus them' mentality when you find a pristine location and know that it's only a matter of time before it's destroyed or secured because of graffiti and vandalism.

With the exception of a very few high security sites this happens EVERY GODDAMN TIME.

Understand why we might be a bit hostile to people who engage in graff?

in drains we have always had guestbooks and notes about directions and your mums ability in the bedroom scribbled somewhere.....a few drains in my locality have been singled out for art and musings on life...as long as its otherwise blank rcp its quite acceptable out of the public eye.

topsides not so much. i personally go for the discreet touch....i bought a mannequin leg and crow and i signed it then hid it amongst pipes at an old factory up about two storys of ladders n shit.. not only did no one else find it but i think we lost it amongst the workings somewhere.

i've recently been considering adopting a personal symbol/marker for some locations...something to leave that doesn't mention my name or the clan but will be recognizable to those who know me....

I was going to suggest this nasty idea, looks like someone beat me to it. Funny idea though. You could leave a little colored toothpick stuck in it for added hilarity though. Just sayin...
