I have 2 Mag lights that take 3 D-cells each, has anyone used the LED conversions in these?
Any good?

I never bothered personally, since the drop-ins available cost the same as an entire new light at the time I have read, though, that the Mag-brand LED units are not terribly bright, especially for the price, and that some of the third-party ones are far more impressive. They all cost a fair bit, though.

The problem with the MagLED drop-ins is that they lack sufficient heatsinking... They're bright at first, but they quickly get dimmer as the internal circuitry cuts the power back to keep from cooking the LED.

For the same money, you can find plenty of decent LED flashlights that are brighter and a LOT more concealable.

Thanks, I don't carry my mags very often, I use LED lights mostly.
I use my mags in underground situations, and personal safety situations.

It's interesting that you use your mags underground - I got into small LED lights because I was tired of carrying big, heavy lights in drains.

I took a 3D Mag underground and it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. I wouldn't advise using a heavy old Maglite when there are plenty of better choices available - I've said it a few times now, but I've found that (for UE at least) Maglites provide a very poor weight vs. output ratio.

Their only redeeming feature is the ability to use them as a cudgel/hammer.
Oh, and they're virtually indestructible.

I've always liked the Xenon Mags, but am not a fan of the incandescent or LED Mags. Personal opinion.

Its not as bright as the original bulb. I had one in a c cell i tried, and while it was a $7 led conversion, I still use it without it. Why carry that huge light around and then get the same output as a smaller led hand sized light?

I don't know call me old fashioned, I just like 'em, I haven't found it to be that cumbersome, slide it in my belt when I'm not using it, comes out nice and easy when I need it.
Mostly I like the ability to focus the beam or spread it out, and I haven't found an LED that I like that does that.

Hey TUGG,

Do you climb with that Mag slid in your belt? Seriously, Maglites weigh so much more than they need to, and vs most other LEDs on the market, the beam is crap in comparison. The only reason you might take a Maglite is if you expect to need it for threatening someone. Otherwise I don't understand taking one. Not the cheapest, certainly not 'pretty', and now that we're well into the age of LED, about the dimmest light on the market. My 6D Mag is as bright as this crappy plastic Dollar Store light I got. If all you're paying for is an aluminum tube, the Chinese have Maglite beat for both brightness and cost.

Maglites have two things going for them: they focus and they serve as a decent weapon. Otherwise they're pretty inferior.

Well, I appreciate all your help, no sense in dragging this thread on and on to have the same thing repeated.
I have bought a few more LED's (I only had cheap crap) and one krypton so I'll see what I see.
Thanks all!
