Staunton Power Plant
entry by MindHacker

On a trip to watch "The Changeling" in Staunton VA we passed a factory-looking building with obviously open upper-story windows and a huge "for sale" sign on it. Well. That's enough for me. You might as well send me a personalized invitation promising champagne and free climbing gear.

After the play we walked down there - fully prepared for an exploration with:
(1) Hobo beating maglight - batteries almost dead, left in my back seat a week prior
(1) CRKT knife - My butterfly broke (chopping wood. It was a stupid idea and a stupid knife) so I had my other choice of a daily carry (they're just useful).
(1) Cellphone camera decent enough to take some shots (I think).
(1000) little candy hearts. By the time we got to the "factory" I was on a pretty good sugar rush, in addition to the default urbexex. (UE excitement)

We tried the front door - locked - which was just as well, since the highway stared right at it. I started climbing around the back side since I saw a window there, but there was a 15' drop to navigate - and I was in dress clothes. Otherwise I woulda dropped off the ledge - but I wasn't about to scuff up my best pair of pants. Luckily my friend saw a very easy window completely unlocked. Once inside, I threw the lock and let her & my ex in. It was a lot smaller than I had thought, but that was just as well on our time table. There was the classic prison-style toolboard, all the outlines black on a white wall, and not too much else. Checking out the second story, the cabinets, the offices, and the storage out back we eventually determined it was a powerplant for the jail - the lone binder left on the floor may have given that one away though. The catwalks and empty equipment (generator) pads could have been for anything.

I was looking for the entrance to the smokestack (which I never found - turns out it was isolated) when we heard the footsteps. On the roof. Which we had said we were gonna avoid because it was right next to the highway... in broad daylight... across from where some cops were parked.... turns out my tard of an ex did it anyways. I was gonna steal some paper (stationary is my default), but I didn't really care for conflict resolution info in the jail's spiral, so I grabbed one of the spare bolts (1"x6") and decided we were leaving.

She showed up before we had to decide whether or not to abandon her, and we all walked back to the car. If you can avoid it, don't carry a steel bolt that large, heavy, and perfectly palm-sized anywhere near cars. You'll want to break every windshield you see.
