recon: Edgewater Hospital 12.16.09

I've begun accumulating some various equipment which may or may not stray from the normal equipment of other UE's out there. I'm in Chicago, it's a city froth with perils and unexpected threats to one's own continued well being.

I've forgone a flashlight and have decided to start using night vision goggles I borrow from my cousin whose a marine. He's back from Iraq and doesn't mind, because he knows damn well I take meticulous care of my things and even moreso of others. Besides, these things cost a good deal of cabbage. I find this headgear cumbersome and awkward. I wish they could somehow make it more...Japanese. Fit these suckers into a pair of goggles or something.

I've begun spying on Edgewater Hospital on the north-side of the city, in Andersonville (Girls town).

n alley in the midst of the abandoned Edgewater Medical Center in Andersonville, Chicago in December, 2007. This is a huge hospital building that was shut down due to Medicare fraud back in 2002

Interesting factoids: Hillary Clinton and John Wayne Gacy were both born here. I don't exactly have any fondness for either individual but its interesting nonetheless.

Field equipment: ninja hand-claws, serves as a weapon and excellent climbing tool. I keep a grappling hook with a 35 ft stretch of nylon rope, a wrist mounted dart-launcher that I made myself as a undergrad final (I'm a industrial designer) with a 15 ft range which I keep loaded with 1 of 2 different crossbow bolts the first has a tiny dose of nitro glycerin and the second horse tranquilize. The nitroglycerin's for breaking doors down and the horse tranquilizer for any entanglements with the police or security officers.... a manriki chain (sort of like nunchucks but much more powerful IMHO) and an Iphone for maps and picture taking. I'm wearing motorcyclist body-armor, just in case I've any run-in's with vicious dogs or thugs for life. Believe it or not I also have a getaway vehicle, a motorized mountain bike that can attain a maximum speed of 50 MPH. But I decided not to bring it, after all it's winter and in all probability I'll end up in slipping and sliding.

I might be armed to the teeth but in my perspective most of my weapons are simple, hidden, and for personal protection. I'm trained in their uses, and most of them have other applications other than self defense or attack. For instance my manriki chain serves as a makeshift climbing device, and a weapon which can entangle or disarm a foe.

Climbed to the rooftop of Edgewater via the fire escape. Nobody saw. I'm also wearing black thermal underwear so I can withstand the cold for long durations. Helps that I brought some absolute citron too to keep even warmer.

I sprinkled some caltrops below the iron rung ladder I used to gain the rooftop, and hid them with snow. In case you're wondering WTF caltrops are, they're barbed metal objects that always point up and if you step on them they'll pierce your shoe and possibly puncture your foot.
Its a good way to guard your path.

I've got a 10' long rolled up stretch of padding. It's highly useful if you have stealth in mind.

No visible entryway from the rooftop except the vent shaft. I inspect it doubtfully but it looks like I could possibly squeeze through, however its awfully cramped tht only a contortionist would find that way inviting. God only knows all I need is to get stuck in a fucken shaft where not a single soul knows where the hell I am. Imagine me calling THAT in! lmfao.

I scaled down the side of the building to the floor below the roof level and gain a window. I grab onto the sill and open the window. I didn't come to take artsy fartsy pix or anything I came in search of anything that might appear interesting or useful...maybe even expensive old medical equipment! Who the hell knows WHAT I can find.

As I start having my fun I heard some noises which put me on edge...the sound of dog paws somewhere inside and somewhere close. I wasn't afraid, I know I should of been. After moving stealthfully as I could I came across a old German shepard that looked well past his prime. A little male bonding and a friendly approach put it at ease. I fed it some cool ranch dorrito's which it ate with greedy abandon. I think it was more lonely and lacked any walking or affection. Despite its aged appearance it still had some kind of gusto to it, I'll give the dog that.

I bypassed the ER and proceeded through what looked like secretarial offices. There were a dozen or so emptied file cabinets, and a shitload of papers. In the corner of one room was a generic looking gateway computer. I ripped out a half-printed fax out of a machine next to it...some medical jargon that didn't really mean much to me.

I continued following the main stairwell, and came on the elevator shaft. It was sealed shut and I had no means of gaining access less I had a crobar. I have to admit, even one who isn't afflicted by fear much being in a large abandoned building by yourself with silence is nerve wracking. You almost half expect a ghost or a zombie to come out of nowhere and chomp on you. So, in short its a real test of your nerves and mental discipline to quiet your inner thoughts and silly self imposed fears.

I actually found a oldschool mac performa which I took with me. Fortunately the thing's not heavy at all. I have a fondness for nostalgic hardware.

Interesting story, but kind of hard to believe.

This has to be someone's double account, but who?

Amusing though, I'll read as much of this as you care to write. I giggled on the inside (screw shared-office space).
