Bargin Barn
entry by CaptOrbit

Once while living in Tennessee I was told if I really wanted to see the worst of the bargain shoppers in action I should go to the the local Goodwill's "Bargain Barn" at 8am, a sectioned off area of the store accessible only thru a separate outside entrance. It's the last chance for items to sell that didn't move on the main floor. The prices are pennies on the dollar compared to normal Goodwill prices.

About 50 people were lined up when the doors were opened by an armed guard. I joked with him that a gun guard seemed to be a little much, considering the low value of items for sale. With out taking his eyes from the crowd He said

"This is your your first time here isn't it? I'm not here to protect the merchandise, I"m here to protect the shoppers from each other."

No sooner had he said this then he pushed past me at a run, he was racing with his baton held above his head toward a Hispanic man and a white woman who were both clutching what appeared to be a boom box, intermittently risking letting go with one arm long enough to swipe at the other. The only other shopper who seemed to take notice of this was another white man who had raided the Hispanic man's cart while he had been fighting with the woman.

When he returned I asked if the police were on their way he shook his head and said

"Oh that wasn't serious enough to call the police, I just gave them a warning."

He went on to explain that many of the trouble makers were flea market vendors and since the bins were only filled once a day (at 8:00 am) the trouble was usually over by 9:30 or 10:00, he himself left at noon. He also told me to look at how the others were pushing their carts backwards so that they could block them from being poached by keeping their upper bodies bent over the top of the cart. I told him I wasn't going to buy anything he turned to look at me for the first time before saying,

"That's probably a good idea"

By the time I left he had broken up three more fights.

It was a little past 8:30

Update

I've since learned that the bins are now loaded at random intervals throughout the day so as to reduce the type of behavior described above.

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.
