| | | Cut/Stab Proof Clothing/Gloves? < on 11/11/2008 1:13 AM >
| | | I've come across a couple of sights online that offer: Gloves for handling "Razorwire" http://www.hexarmo...ustries/razorwire/ Also, needle stick proof gloves, and cut resistant gloves. http://www.hexarmor.com/ And stabproof clothing: (Hobo-Stab Insurance Anyone?) http://www.bladeru...oduct/products.php (Bladerunner is located in UK, Hexarmor is USA) I was just wondering if anyone has used any of this; or thinks it would be worth the money. Figuring between $30-100 for gloves and around $100 for the aramid shirts.

| | | I use the needle stick gloves when frisking patients. Even the el cheapo gloves work as long as aren't trying to stab yourself with a needle.

| | | back when I worked at Wendy's, they made us wear metal mesh gloves when we cut tomatoes to prevent us from cutting ourselves. I don't know where to get them or how much they cost, though, but you can probably find them in kitchen, chef, or restaurant supply places.

Steel or composite shank boots. I absolutely will not go exploring unless I have my boots. They'll stop just about anything but maybe you jumping from 15 feet onto a spike.

Thats why I want it on sneakers though. Cant climb walls, run, or sneak nearly as well in boots. While climbing onto a roof the other week the tip of a wrought iron bar went through my shoe.

| | | I've got a couple friends who are into medieval re-enactments and swords and stuff, and they make swords and chain mail. I'm sure they make gloves also. But they say the armor is heavy. Might not be too fun to walk 5 miles in just in case you meet a hobo. In that situation, I would just yell "Here, catch!" and throw charged capacitors at him...

Best you can probably get are steel-toe hiking boots. on second thought.... maybe you could make them... line a pair of sneakers with these... ("cut them" to fit the length a band saw should do the trick without fucking up the material) http://www.hexarmo...s/8-arm-guard-8tw/ http://www.drillsp...10009S-M_Arm_Guard It won't stop it from penetrating the sneaker; but should stop anything from going into your foot. It might be a light(er)weight alternative to steel toe hikers. [last edit 11/25/2008 9:56 PM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

I have a pair that I swear by. The only thing is that they are not warm at all and bad for winter stuff. It never ocurred to me to bring home my cut resistance gloves from work. They have a policy that we can bring home any of our safety equipment to use on our off times as long as we bring it back.

| | | I wear size 14 Magnum Stealth Force II composite shank waterproof, insulated boots. I spent a pretty penny of them, but living in the Great Northeast often requires solid boots. Things won't slip even on a sheet of ice. I swear, I've never been so surefooted. Edit: Magnum also makes a line of SWAT/ballistic type clothing that offer a lot of tear and cut resistance, but are not "-proof". I'm thinking about getting some of their pants for exploring. $50 for pants is not unheard of, especially since I wear 38x34 which is apparently the most rare size for men, since I can never find it anywhere but Old Navy. I never bought any...But I would be confident enough with the HexArmor... Seeing as it was designed to handle it. But I haven't seen anything worse than Barbwire in my area. I mean I have seen Razorwire but only on things I wouldn't take the risk to explore...Active Military Bases, for example. I have even seen stabproof jackets that would work as well. I have yet to see stabproof pants though. If I had to cross multiple locations with Razorwire, then it would be worth the 300 dollar investment for pants, jacket, gloves made from kevlar, aramid, etc. One visit to the ER for stitches is worth that, if not more.

I too wear the elusive 38x34, and if I want new pants its usually a long drawn out endless 3 day shopping ordeal.

Try 28x34. I pretty much always need a belt.

Haha. 27x31 was the exact size I needed for Senior Prom dress pants two years ago, can't beat that for more random/ill fitting. I buy 30x30's or 30x32's and I keep 3or4 $2 web belts kicking around... one in my car just in case, one for my work pants, another for my jeans, the last one has a broken buckle. I go between the 30/32 lengths because I wear my pants at my waist like I'm supposed to; and the sizes are no longer consistent. I swear clothing companies are making pant lengths shorter and shorter because kids these days wear 'em down the their knees. baaack on topic I never bothered to order the gloves. A set of regular leather gloves is all I need for barbwire. If I had to go through razorwire, I'd consider it.

My roommate was screwing around with my stab-resistant gloves and found out why it's "resist" not "proof." Not sure why he thought a hammer and a toothpick was a good idea, but generally you have to really push hard with pointy things to get through the Hexarmor stuff. I think you could put climb over barbed wire without care for hand placement, although I haven't tried this at work yet.

| | | Ripstop isn't stab-proof. All it is is re-inforced nylon/cotton/whatever to stop rips from spreading very far. It does this by having a heavyduty cross hatch pattern woven into the fabric that stops it from ripping further. It isn't just blackhawk that make ripstop products, loads of things are made out of ripstop material such as BDUs, sails and camping equipment.
