I'm thinking of going up to Uijeongbu, the city best known for being the setting of M*A*S*H (which doesn't look quite as much like Californian wilderness, though). Over the past couple years a large number of US bases have been closed down up there. Have a look at this article. It's filled with pro-US army statements I don't want to get into, but this guy looked around some of the bases.

Sounds cool, you'd want to be careful though.

This is kind of off topic, but isn't there a town inside the DMZ?

Yeah. By the way, I did make it to the outside of some of these bases, just to have a look.

Nice. What sort of security was there, and if there were guards, were they locals?

I went to four bases, although only considered three which were side-by-side. The middle one had Korean guards, as well as Korean soldiers playing soccer inside. The two others were deserted, and had no security other than sturdy razor wire fences.
