Bumping into the law

A friend and I were exploring a drain under the I-75, I-70 Cloverleaf one night, Although there are some very large diameter tunnels in the area, the one we were in happened to be a 5ft. “backbreaker” , which is no fun since I'm 5’11 and my friend is 6’4. so the junction boxes were a welcome place to stand up and rest. Up until now all of the junctions had either been capped in concrete or topped by a metal grate. This one was different though, it opened right up to the sky. From the sounds of the traffic it sounded like we were still near the center of the cloverleaf. There was a ladder set into the wall but after some discussion we decided that it would be to much of a risk to shine our lights up the ladder for fear of the beams being seen from the highways above. E. decided to climb the roughly 8 or 9ft to the surface and get a bearing on our location. With a small pen light in his teeth he slowly climbed upward closely inspecting each rung as he went. As he got to the top he shut off the light while keeping his head down to look for something on the outside to pull himself up by. That's when he hit his head on the dark shape sitting about a foot above the comer of the opening where the ladder let out. Now I noticed it for the first time too , from my perspective it was just a dark void in the stars.
“What is that thing?” I called up.
“I don’t know , my eyes are still adjusting”(adjusting to what? It's dark down here, it's dark up there too. Oh well, E. Is a great guy , but he was never one to let logic stand in the way of a poorly reasoned argument.) He rapped on it a few times with his knuckles. “It’s metal.” he called back down.
(Now at this point I should add that either E. should have been wearing his glasses or has worse night vision than I do, either way.)
I decided to give it a quick hit with my spotlight . MY next thoughts came pretty fast.
Hmm, it’s the back driver side fender and bumper of a parked car.

It's a Caprice,... a gray Caprice with yellow stripes. Hmm... Caprice + gray + yellow stripes +parked in median area = Ohio State Trooper. “Oh S---”
E. meanwhile had come to the same conclusion and was now rapidly descending. We both took off down the pipe as fast as it’s low ceiling would allow. There were no troopers waiting to greet us at the outfall, and we sure didn't stop to see if the car was still there. He had to be asleep or blasting the radio not to notice E. hitting his head on the bumper, knocking on the side of the car or my flashlight. Actually the trooper was the lucky one another foot back and him and his car would have been in the hole. Oh well that's my blooper story.
