An Outsider's Opinion
entry by CaitTheGreat

So I was explaining my night spent at the Broadview Developmental Center to my roommate and he got pretty upset about the whole thing. We went back and forth for a while, he giving me reasons why I shouldn't explore "sad places" and me explaining that I'll explore anywhere I damn well please.

I tried to explain that my fascination is with the structure itself, and the history...not so much the sad, creepy things that happened there. I'm not out looking for ghosts and I'm not trying to stir up trouble, but he's convinced that I'm messing with the wrong things when I explore a "sad place."

How does he define a sad place? He defines it as one of those places you walk in and you feel in the pit of your stomach that there is an oppressive air to the place--that something isn't quite right. Sure, I know that feeling--but it's not like I'm out trying to raise the dead or anything! So, basically, he's telling me I shouldn't explore places that he views as sad.

What makes his opinion on a place final? There are two ways to look at every situation. Most people, when you mention abandoned mental hospital think sad, scary, ghosts, death, fear, etc. But who's to say that's what it's all about? I told my dad about the night I spent there and his response was the same as mine: "Imagine all the lives that took place there!" Lives. Not just deaths. People lived there. People experienced joy and happiness there. Children played and laughed there.

Sure, bad things happened there...but so did good things.

Anyhow, he went so far as to write me a letter trying to explain that feeling he gets in the pit of his stomach.

It's a building. It's a structure. It's brick and concrete and wood. Spirits are not confined by these things.
