5 Abandoned houses in Pickering

Hello All,

I have finally made my first find, well sort of. During lunch I felt like doing some driving around and exploring. To my success I was able to find about 5 abandoned WIDE open houses.

The reason I say sort of is because these houses have been hit by vandals, hard. One house had the entire front spray painted with derogetory words such as "Only Assholes Live here" aside from the 1 house the others are relativly okay. All have their garages pried open, doors wide open and misc junk all over the place. There is also a car without tires smashed to hell on the road.

I also found a dirt path that lead into the bushes perhaps with more abandonments but somebody was having their lunch there and decided not to venture it. There is still 1 active house at the end of the street.

I managed to pop one of my low profile tires driving around and luckily I hit a nail and there doesn't look to be any sidewall damage. Good thing I have my $15 Cdn tire pump in my car.

Where is this located you ask? Normally I know there are rules against posting locations but since this place has been widly hit, I doubt there is any further damage that can be done.

Take 401 to Brock RD (not brock ST) but brock rd in pickering. Take brock rd south to Bayly. Pull a left (east) on Bayly. Make a right at the first lights after brock (right after the train tracks)its called Squires Beach Rd.

Follow Squires beach until it ends at the water treatment plant. Make a left and follow the winding street until you reach a 3 way stop (no stop for southbound traffic) you will see a whole bunch of NO EXIT signs in any direction, pull a right on to MONTGOMERY PARK (note there is a montgomery park on the other side of BROCK, it doesnt connect directly) follow montgomery park for a few hundred meters and you will see a street on your left, once you make the left (south) you will see immidiatly on your left hand side 4 or 5 abandonded houeses along with one on your right. The very last house at the end of the street (passed the trashed car) is active. If you followed the street to the dead end instead of pulling a left there is another dirt path that I did not venture down.

Didn't explore since I had to get back to work, I imagine theres nothing very intresting about these places except for the random crap on the floor.

Hopefully will post pics soon.

*update*

http://www.region....CHRAReport1951.pdf

some historical information about the site + pictures towards the end

*Update again*

Okay so the database has this site as Timothy Rogers house

there are also 5 other houses that dont seem as old as the stone build Timothy Rogers house. Maybe they are somewhere else in the DB but the ones I saw definatly were not as old as the ones photographed in the DB.

so much for my discovery. Ah well.

First of all, it's still your discovery, Aggressive. You found a very hidden neighborhood on your own. That is valid. I believe only the Rogers house is in the UER galleries. So if you were to post up some pics of the other places then that would definitely be a worthy documentation. Much of the GTA has been "covered" here but that doesn't mean it's been 100% covered. Document what you find and don't concern yourself with who's been there first. You're doing a fine job.

I discovered that area you speak of about 2 weeks ago while looking for the timothy rogers house. I should definatly go back an take a closer look, i only took a few photos before i left. However being the first one to post anything about it, i'll give Aggressive credit for the find.

Hey guys, went back after work and there is another 3 houses abandoned. These 3 houses are pretty nice and can be found by instead of making a right on Montgomery park going straight. I will take my camera tommorow and take some pictures. I checked out that path that lead from the dead end and it was the one in the DB. Wasnt very intresting and to anyone visitng, either park your car on the street or back it in, as someone has stacked enough branches to block off the U turn. Took me a 30 point turn to get outta there.

Okay so I need to rant.

<Start rant>
Remember how I Said I had the nail in the tire? Well on my way to the mechanic my tire tore to shreds on the 401. No problem a $250 tow later got me to my mechanic ($200 is being covered by TD auto club)

So I get my winter tires and put them on. (not paying another $200 for a low pro tire) So I figure home free, forget about slowing down to 2 km/h around train tracks and all the other unpleasentness associated with having fancy wheels.

So my brother and a few freinds go out to whiskey a gogo's and as Im leaving the parking lot I hear a werid noise coming form my wheels. I figure oh the tires must not be balanced ill take a look at them tommorow.

The noise became louder and louder, so at a red light I walked out of my car and noticed THE WHEEL HAD NO BOLTS ON IT! yes thats right i was >< that close to having my car sitting on one of its rotors. Yes my idiot mechanics assisstant FORGOT TO TIGHTEN MY BOLTS. I walked 1.5 km to find only 2 bolts! This was right as the storm kicked in and all the power in the Highway 7/Center area was knocked out! I managed to jack up the car and put on the 2 bolts.

I pulled 4 left turns and 1 u turn on my way to whiskeys, THANK GOD I WASN"T KILLED!

thanks for listening guys, Im going to get those photos tommorow.
<end rant>

You wouldn't beleive how many abandoned houses there are in this neighborhood, despite its nice location close to the lake but its awful proximity to the water treatment plant.

Theres plenty of spelling mistakes that I probably wont correct since Im so frustrated about what happened tonight. Anyways, exterior photos tommorow unless it rains hard. I'll try to get some interior photos as soon as a buddy wants to come along.

We also noted some pick up trucks in the area, we thought they were renovators when really they were probably rummaging for anything that could be used as scrap metal

Pictures are up guys!

Also on my way home I found the future home of Planters Nuts here in North York. Its currently under renovation but that didn't stop me from looking around. See my other posts for more details

http://[email protected]

I bet there going to level these houses soon and build a niche townhouse community by the water.

btw if anyone comes out here (which I doubt they will since houses are a bit boring) make sure you DO NOT DRIVE PAST THE JUNK CAR. There is an active home there. Someone in a car saw me pulling a U-turn but bother trying to chase me or anything. I dont blame them for not selling, it is lakefront in a very quiet neighborhood. Only downside is the water treatment plant.

The houses on the one street that hasnt been vandalized that hard must not have been abandoned for long. The grass is still relativly short and there is about 5 missed newspapers lying on the drive way edge

Any chance a mod could edit the original post to 8 Houses + Pics?

Holy crap! I was down there at the Rogers house in early Winter last year and those other houses weren't abandoned yet (or at least I'm pretty sure). That car wreck on the roadside seems new-ish. That whole neighborhood must have been bought out by a developer recently. It's like a ghost town now!

I also made a short video driving down one of the streets. if anyones interested pm me your e-mail addy.

There were about 4-6 dirt path / paved driveways, an indication to me that there were even more homes in this area at one time, however they usually led to empty lots or were blocked off with rocks as little as 3 feet into them.

Hello All,

My hubby did some work last year on government owned rental homes and I remember him telling me about this little hidden neighbourhood in Pickering that he never knew existed. One of the tenants (who was very upset he was getting kicked out) told him that the entire neighbourhood was going to be demolished to make way for a new and improved sewage treatment plant.

The Timothy Rogers house is really nice. I love the old fieldstone farmhouses.
I am going to go and take a few pictures of it....I really hope the government will save that historic house.

I am curious as to why the stone house is called the Timothy Rogers house?

I read the historical report on the house provided by Aggressive (Thanks!) and it says the house was built by the Linton family around 1851.
The pictures of the house shown in the report are dated April 2005 and the house does not look anything like the state that it is in now.

Hey Kitta,

I have a good book on Pickering, and Tim Rogers was one of the very first settlers to the area. He was a Quaker, and bought 800 acres+ off a guy named Mr Smith (who was the lucky son who inherited 1000s of acres of land that is father owned in Pickering). As a side note, Smith Sr. was given the land kinda as a present for service and loyalty to England...nice eh! Well, Rogers made a deal in order to be able to buy the land, and that was to help populate the area by bringing several farming Quaker families up north (from the US), which he successfully did.

Rogers was born I believe in the mid 1700s, and died around 1820ish (dont quote me). I believe he acquired the 800 acres of land which this house stands on in 1807-ish. Now it gets confusing...Rogers (I personally though) had his home more north (where Pickering village stands today), but perhaps he once lived in this southern home? Ill look into this today more and get back to you. If I visit the homestead and look at the construction materials, I could likely estimate a building date based on construction and wood grain. Okay...Im a big geek.

Side note: When Rogers was first settling in this area, only the Peak family would have been neighbours. (Peak was a farmer, fur trader, extreme loyalist, native interpreter) Talk about lonely!
