sanctuary

the following was written june 28th, 06.
location specific information and pictures are withheld on behalf of my paranoia, at least till i know who's reading this:

breathtaking is the wrong word to describe how i feel on my first rooftop here in houston. i am closer to my nature, and that can be described as easily as fully explaining what life itself means to me. let it suffice to say i'm thankful to God. and not just because i happen to be lounging against a church parapet as i type this.

months ago i looked at a map of houston and picked an out of the way cemetery as an option to camp my first night in the city. after stepping off the bus and scouting some abandonments firsthand downtown, i realized i would get my throat slit if i were to pick the wrong place. my adventure in atlanta only reenforced this notion [http://www.uer.ca/...d=3&threadid=3 3301]. so out to the cemetery i marched. talent is the wrong word to describe how i spot accessible rooftops. it's more like self-inflicted necessity mixed with a childish imagination. nevertheless here i am swatting mosquitos in a sort of trancelike awe before the nearby skyline. i've never seen anything like this. for the first hour at least i simply lay here and watched individual lights from those alien monoliths shut off one by one. every now and then one would blink back on, but on the whole they were gradually shutting down... like the thoughts in my mind. after 30+ hours on the bus and in close confinement with a sweaty, obnoxious pot luck of humanity, my mind was breaking apart with agitation at a feverish rate. still, here i am. peaceful at last. once again in touch. pressed against the night sky, wishing i could get closer. reminds me of my first true love. romantic isn't the right word to describe the mood up here. it's more like sensual. when i first discovered ue in a factory on some train tracks, i often listened to 'last train home' by the lost prophets. it was sort of a theme song for my wanderlust at the time. now, as i repeat history in a different corner of america two years later, i randomly heard 'rooftops' by the same band on the radio. weird.

time to get some sleep.
