i offer a suggestion to let full members add 'hits' towards an annoying user. a threshold is reached, and the user gets the 'annoying' icon added. kinda flags them as a nuisance and everyone can see that it's a bunch of users in agreement, taking some of the burden off the sysop. a subsequent ban would be of little surprise if the behaviour continued.

People love to have the annoying icon. It wouldn't help.

The easiest and best solution is to simply ban problem users. Problem solved.

then, alternately, in luei of the icon, which i suppose could be considered a badge of honor by some, a temporary freeze on their ability to post new messages. a couple days, a week, whatever. maybe a limit of one post per day, i dunno. just trying to throw out ideas. just trying to think of middle grounds and ways to get people involved but there will always be cases where this is too lenient, too.

If we review the ban list - we have to ask... WHY did these people flame, troll and run against the grain to the point of removal??

Some set out to do that from day 1, I'm sure. Other's were offering no more than a sharply expressed and bluntly put opinion. Indeed, I've been asked many times, here on PM and at other boards how I've managed to see this thread out without being banned!?

It puzzles me too - I can only think that there is an inconsistent approach towards banning in place. An attitude of 'well, if your face fits, your in'?

It's my feeling that we should review the recent banning, accepting that things got a little nuts for a while.

Overall, we should look at WHY flame wars erupt here, WHY users 'troll' (and that's sooooo subjective I hesitate to use the word) and what can be done to change things for the better.

I'll readily accept that no board ever in the history of boards will get along without banning someone at some point... But in the last few weeks UER has forcibly excluded more people (and more good, genuine explorers) than it has in the last YEAR! (Data based on actual banning and user resignation)

If this continues, Av is going to have to look at a dedicated web-server to run the banlist page!

I used to care. I used to try my best to work around other people's problems and try to find a solution that would work for both of us. I even signed up on other UE forums like Deggi5 and Abandoned and whatnot, to try to solve problems on "their turf" so to speak.

It didn't work. The trolling didn't stop, and since I was essentially "putting myself out there", people took the opportunity to insult me even more. You have no idea.

I don't care anymore.

Now, I run UER for those who like UER. If you don't like UER, just go somewhere else. Don't troll, don't spam, don't try to force your opinion onto me. Just fuck off.

I'm back. Maybe everyone should do what I did.

Left at 3:30 AM with no sleep, drove really fast for a hour and a half the get to the site. Got there a little before dawn, and a cop who is trying to keep things safe. Stayed till 3:00 PM, I was literally falling down with fatigue from climbing hundreds, and hundreds of feet with 40+ pounds of gear. I had to leave even though it was still bright. Drove back like the mad man I am. Slept for three hours.

I feel great, I'm soar as hell, got grit in me teeth, and camera bag, well it's everywhere! I did tag this site; I wrote my name in the grit with my finger. I left footprints too. What the fuck.

I hear ya! I didn't climb as much as you did, but I got into a site this morning that I've been itching to get into for about 2 years. I took 381 pictures of which probably 3 are good. hehe. But, I explored and it was nice. That's what this is all about. I'd rather do that than websites any day. Don't be worryin', be explorin'.

I think we're all thinking about this too much.

Indeed. We celebrated by visiting the old George AFB.

I went to a BBQ at an old Marine's house in the woods, almost fell asleep because of the sheer peace and quiet, then went to Graphite to troll the woods for more mining remains. Then I watched "band of brothers " . Now I got a Molson in one hand and my bed is calling me.
