Obviously, neither of you has looked very had. Winnipeg has Curious George; who is one of the craziest, most hardcore, high-energy, determined and damned good explorers in Canada.

It's weird to see that black box covering your face and not other regions.

| | | While we're all in one place ( ;) ) is anyone is Winnipeg interesting in doing explorations once the weather warms up a bit? I have a few (easily accessable) locations I would like to check out with a local group, as none of my friends seem to be interesting in UE unfortunately.

I seem to largely have the same trouble that you do. I am a budding urban explorer, having started from the bottom rung of the ladder (IE: exploring residential construction, retention pond drain pipes, etc.) and I would really like to start branching out with much more exciting locations. It is not so much that my friends do not like to explore abandoned buildings and unseen corridors, it is more the case that they would see it as just another hang out spot, rather than an interesting piece of the urban world that aches to be explored. Also too, when you get to the "down and dirty" locations such as sewers and old dust covered warehouses, that is when we would start having to leave people behind. I KNOW there would be tons of complaining about cleanliness and all of the "elements" that we would be exposed to, and I seriously just don't have the patience to contend with that, while having fun on an adventure. Aside from all that I do know one friend of mine that would absolutely love to go exploring through various parts of Winnipeg that we have never seen before. I know he would be up for almost anything you had in mind, and I would as well. I am very interested to know which locations you have in mind. I would love to see your list if you would not mind volunteering it in this thread. [last edit 2/28/2006 7:06 AM by Bixby - edited 1 times]

Agreed. My friends definitely wouldn't appreciate the nature of the exploration. I don't know if they'd follow the same ethics that I do, in terms of leaving cigarette butts on the ground / bringing drugs/alcohol with them to locations. I think it would just make the experience less enjoyable in general.

| | | None of these things should stop you. When I was a newbie I explored everything by myself (and still do for the most part). The first couple of solo missions are quite scary but after your 5th or 6th mission you start to recognize sounds and get more comfortable in these places. If its too cold you are not wearing enough layers (or your stupid like me and get frostbite).

| | | You do have a point, George. I guess that I am a hypocrite in the sense that I am still making it a social situation by taking a pal along with me and refusing to explore alone. In the spirit of UE, I suppose I should give the solitary romps a shot, but I can say (as you just outlined) that it will definitely take some getting used to. I have always gone on my small explorations with others thus far. I guess that makes me more of a tourist ... How embarrassing. I am usually most content when with others, however I would still classify myself as an introvert. Nothing beats a little "me time". So it probably couldn't hurt to do a few personal explorations. I am definitely comfortable doing small, "safe" explorations (monastery ruins, active sites) by myself. When it comes to abandoned buildings in bad repair I just feel really uncomfortable going alone. Especially since the majority of them are in bad parts of town (Higgins for example). What precautions do you put in place to make yourself feel "safe"? [last edit 3/1/2006 12:32 AM by Ninjako - edited 1 times]

| | | I do nothing, those parts of town are not that dangerous. Just mind your own business and people will generally leave you alone. /There's only hookers on Higgins...and there are only two or three uninteresting buildings left of Higgins.

| | | Thanks for the encouragement. Do you care any type of safety equipment with you when you explore older sites? (besides respirator / flashlight)
