Respect, just a little bit
entry by Jester
12/15/2005 5:38 PM

I'm one of the ethics-nazis here, so of course I make my point of view known about a lack of ethics shown by some people. Something that ties into that has really been evident lately.

Respect.

As I've watched this hobby grow in the few years I've known there was a community, but the thing that hasn't grown along with it, is respect. When it's lack of respect for a location, such as when people damage things or take souvenirs, that's bad enough. But when it also extends to the other explorers, especially when it's an explorer doing you a favour, it's pretty damn pathetic.

Nothing demonstrated this more to me than at the first Opex. Here you had explorers coming from all over, to be shown tremendous hospitality by the local exploration community. Just because you do something at home, doesn't mean you should do it when you're a guest somewhere (this relates to everyday life as well as UE). So when you're a guest somewhere, you should be showing some respect for those that are showing you the hospitality. So when someone that was being shown an active site, stole something that belonged to a worker at that site, I was shocked. First off it's flat out theft, it's not salvage if a location is an active building. Second, if the group had been caught, everyone could be accesory to that theft. Third, without the group getting caught, the worker would still obviously realize his possession was gone and know someone had been in there, which could lead to tightening security and more serious situations for the next explorer in there in the event of getting caught.

What's the point ?

If you want to disrespect your own turf and shit in your own nest, that's all up to you. But if you're in somebody else's house and being treated well, it's the lowest possible amount of respect to your host to do something like that. It's despicable.

So when people ask why I don't want to make a bid for an Opex on my turf, there's a big reason why. I don't need that shit here. As much as I would love to host the vast majority of explorers, there area few bad apples that make it just not worth it.

very good point.

I find it very disheartening that someone would do that (especially at an active site) and compromise the rest of the group and future UE'ers.

hopefully as time passes the collective communities will start culling the bad apples from the good, then the former will be left to associate with those of like minds -thieves, vandals, and graff'ers-.

safe and happy exploring to you!

Hehe. It's a joke man. But yes, I am kinda psychotic.

Also, it seems there needs to be some more respect given to the younger UEers here. Some people (not naming any names) treat us like idiots just because our age ends with a -teen and assume all we know is from Splinter cell or metal gear solid or some stupid sh*t. We're people too and we know things.

I think the whole "nazi" word denotes something negative. Ethics=good. How about we come up with another term for you?

Hmmm..."ethics-captain?" Or "cap'n," if you so desire. Or perhaps "ethics, PhD?"

Aannndd, I'm done.

I'm so tired. Don't mind the rambling.

Respect is not given, it is earned. I will say again: respect is not the issue here. Contradicting ones' self is!

I usually try to judge people based on what they say and do. Jester was using an example (14 year old snipers) of people who unfortunately seem to have a difficult time differentiating between video games (or movies) and reality.
If you actually practice sharpshooting/riflery, that's cool, but calling yourself a 'sniper' is about the fastest way to make people reluctant to take you seriously. That, or saying you 'learned UE "moves" from Splinter Cell', which those 14 year old "snipers" were claiming.

This isn't a game, and it's not an extreme sport. Technically, it's illegal (trespassing), but it's a good hobby for those who are not satisfied with being told 'you can't go in there, it's *insert excuse here*'.
Oh yeah, and the photos are some of the coolest architectural shots I've ever seen.

Thanks, Jester.

It's a shame when others fuck with your shit, making what you do either dangerous or odious, and further endanger those of us who treat our gem locations as sacred spaces.

Hopefully, newbies will read your journal entry (make it mandatory reading for FULL ACCESS wannabees) and will take your sage advice to heart.
